NOTE:
This is a log of a LIVE CHAT originating from the Green Room
at Chicon, the 58th Annual World Science Fiction Convention.
We thank our guests for being game enough to brave a live chat
under less than optimal circumstances.
Our guests were typing on unfamiliar laptops with very small
keyboards. (Click Here to see the chat area.)
Because of these several impediments, as well as other
technical difficulties, you will find typos and occasional
replication of text. In our humble opinion, typos show that
the logs are of *live* chats, not canned interviews, and
minimal editing of these logs has taken place.

[Cybling] Folks...let's say Hi to Paul Levinson!
* Aquaeros thinks to repeat her message... ]]Welcometh, Paul, to the eerie, computer-bound world of DarkMyst's IRC server.
* Cybling waves at Paul
[Cybling] lol
[Poika] Hi
[Paul_Levinson] Hi everyone!
[Tomb] Hi Paul_Levinson !
[Aquaeros] Oh, did I mention the great Void?
[VeronicaMatrix] Hello Mr. Levinson
[Aquaeros] Careful...
[Aquaeros] Don't trip and fall into it, Paul
[VeronicaMatrix] ack! tomb
[Paul_Levinson] Nice, colorful hello, Tomb!!
[Cybling] If you have questions for our guest, please just ask. But please, let the guest answer one before asking another. Thanks!
[Tomb] Thank you
[Paul_Levinson] Hello VeronicaM!
[Cybling] Okay, Paul quite a bit of excitement last night eh?
[Cybling] (Hugo awards last night).
[Paul_Levinson] Yeah, it was a great ceremony
[Paul_Levinson] especially nice to see the writer & director of Galaxy Quest up on the stage
* Aquaeros has to slip idle, but will brb
[Cybling] LOL! Yes...Galaxy Quest won Best Dramatic Presentation, didn't it!
[Paul_Levinson] Yes, they did ... I have a feeling there will be a GQ II, about winning a Hugo
[Cybling] Folks...for a full list of the Hugo winners go to http://onsite.chicon.org and click on Hugos.
[Cybling] LOLOLOLOL Paul.
[VeronicaMatrix] There has to be another galaxy quest there has to be!
[Cybling] Now I was running an informal survey, and most people expected Matrix to win...so this was a bit of an upset.
[Tomb] Or they just might show the records of giligans isle.
[Paul_Levinson] The same kind of surprise happened with the Dramatic Nebula this year:
[Paul_Levinson] most people expected The Matrix to win, but The Sixth Sense won the award
[Cybling] Paul, let's talk a little about you. How long have you been President of the SFWA.
[Serenah_SS_Suchomimus] back...
[Poika] Well Galaxy quest had a story all along, Matrix was more superficial somehow, no?
[Cybling] (SFWA is the Science Fiction Writers of America)
[Paul_Levinson] I've been President of SFWA for 2 and 1/2 years
[Cybling] Yikes...how long is the term?
[Poika] 2 and a half?
[Cybling] lol Poika..I think he has to be in the barrell a little longer than that.
[Paul_Levinson] Yikes is a good word for this; the term is 1 year; I became Pres with the previous Pres left (I was VP), and then I was elected Pres twice
[Cybling] Wonderful...or is it. You're responsible for keeping things running in that organization. True? Must be a battle at times.
[Poika] So where did you get the half more year?
[Paul_Levinson] (smile) It's a battle all the time, but I love it -- because it really does give me a chance to do what I can to help further science fiction in the world
[Cybling] I see that you also presided at a SFWA Junior Meeting at Worldcon this year. Now is that folks under 21 who've made professional sales, or professional authors who write for Children?
[Paul_Levinson] The SFWA Jr. Membership is for folks under 21, who have either had an sf ot fantasy story published in a school or equivalent magazine, or have won or placed in a writing contest
[Cybling] Now the writing contest for youngsters at the convention here this year...the one that was awarded a prize...
[Cybling] that's run by the SFWA or the convention committee?
[Paul_Levinson] The contest here a Worldcon is run by the convention committee; but the winners are indeed now eligible for SFWA Jr. Membership
[Cybling] Paul... can you tell me a little about your book Silk Code?
[Cybling] If you have questions for our guest, please just ask. But please, let the guest answer one before asking another. Thanks!
* Serenah_SS_Suchomimus curses under her breath. 12Sorry... g2 dash... too much work to pay attention to this room... have fun all, please!
[Paul_Levinson] The Silk Code is my first novel -- I've published 30 short stories and 8 non-fiction books -- The Silk Code features my NYPD forensive detective, Dr. Phil D'Amata, who investigates -- among other things -- a Neanderthal corpse that pops up in NYC, carbon dates at 30,000 years, but the guy was seen and alive just a week earlier
[Cybling] Ooooh...that sounds like a good one Paul. Tell me, does genetic research figure in the story at all?
[Paul_Levinson] Yes, one of the key points of the story is the possibility that 30,000 years ago, folks were engaged in a low-tech kind of genetic engineering
[Cybling] (Sidenote folks: The convention has killed the elevators in Hyatt's East Tower, so today's guest will be delayed getting here by a few minutes. We'll try to keep the chat running with people we shanghaii from tables.)
[Cybling] This is a must read then Paul. Paul, ...
[Tomb] (lol)
[Poika] Well genetic engineering has existed for centuries, no?
* Tomb will have to read the book it sounds interesting
[Paul_Levinson] Poika: Yes indeed: Darwin himself called it "artificial selection," as in the breeding of crops and animals
[Paul_Levinson] Hope you enjoy it, Tomb.
[Cybling] Paul, do you have excerpts of your stories available from your site? Or is there a story out in any of the mags right now we can look at to get a sample of your work?
[Poika] Yes that's what I meant
[Paul_Levinson] The December issue of Analog -- which will be out in a few weeks -- has my story, "The Man Who Brought Down the New York Times"; and The Silk Code will be out in mass-market paperback in mid-November
[Cybling] Folks...you can learn more about Paul Levinson by going to his Link page here at http://www.onsite.com. Just click on chats, then click on Chat Guests to get a full list of the people we scheduled for chats.
[Cybling] Folks...Swanwick is here. Luckily he wasn't staying in the East Tower...
[Cybling] lol...
[Paul_Levinson] Take care everyone! Good talking with you!
[Cybling] So, I'm sorry Paul...gonna have to say goodbye to you now.
[Cybling] Thanks so much!
[Tomb] Bye paul
[VeronicaMatrix] bye
[Tomb] sadly i didn't program a fancy goodbye...
