This is a log of a LIVE CHAT originating from the Green Room at Chicon, the 58th Annual World Science Fiction Convention.

We thank our guests for being game enough to brave a live chat under less than optimal circumstances. Our guests were typing on unfamiliar laptops with very small keyboards. (Click Here to see the chat area.)

Because of these several impediments, as well as other technical difficulties, you will find typos and occasional replication of text. In our humble opinion, typos show that the logs are of *live* chats, not canned interviews, and minimal editing of these logs has taken place.

Lisa Dumond's Website

[Cybling] Welcome to chat Lisa!
[DuMond] Hi Aaron!
[Cybling] Good to have you here today.
[Cybling] If you have questions for our guest, please just ask. But please, let the guest answer one question before you ask another.
* FireClaw waves to Lisa then sits down again and glues herself to the seat
[FireClaw] Just so that peer doesn't get me again
[rashotam] Hello how's the chat going?
[DuMond] We are just now starting up.
[Cybling] Okay Lisa, I see from your website that you've sold Cold As Hades and it's due to come out in June of 2000.
[Cybling] Can you tell us a little about it?
[DuMond] Its a mix of sc-fi, horror, humor and mystery and I have copies for sale right here at chicon
[Cybling] Your website is http://www.hikeeba.com/hades/ right?
[DuMond] yes indeed it is.
[Cybling] Excellent. And I believe we have that linked from your log page here.
[DuMond] you can also get there by www.meviews.com and www.lisadumond.com
[DuMond] half the site is a collection of all my reviews (over 200) of sc-fi horror and fantasy
[DuMond] and the other half is my fiction, bio, blurry picture, etc.
[Cybling] sc-fi horror...now that's a mix of the two genres?
[Russ] Hello
[DuMond] hello Russ
[Cybling] Where can we usually find your reviews?
[DuMond] SFSite.com, scifinow.com, blackgate.com, disenchanted.com
[DuMond] Oh ruzich is the amazing artist who did the cover of Darkers
[Cybling] Lisa, I don't believe you told us who's publishing Cold as Hades. Who's the publisher again?
[ruzich] Hey DuMond, how's it going?
[DuMond] Hard Shell Word Factory is the publisher. You can also get the book at their website as well as Amazon.
[Cybling] Lisa, you're scheduled for an autographing session later today, and a panel, Reviewing SF Books on Friday...
[ruzich] This is a great chanc to ask you - where did you get your inspiration for Hades?
[Cybling] will you be autographing a particular book at the session?
[Cybling] Most of us folks don't know how those work.
[ruzich] inspiration for Hades?
[DuMond] inspiration came from looking at goth, punk people trying to be "cool"
[ruzich] (I'm just figuring out the controls here -sorry
[DuMond] yes I will be autographing Darkers today.
[DuMond] I saw the characters in Darkers as people who wanted the ultimate "cool"
[Cybling] Excellent...so there are copies here for sale at the convention?
[ruzich] What are you working on now?
[DuMond] copies will be for sale IF they arrive at 11:00
[DuMond] as the publisher promised.
[Cybling] LOL. Yes, things can get a little backed up...
[Cybling] at the loading dock.
[DuMond] I'm working on a collaboration for a dark realism novel with an established author.
[DuMond] hello AJPOP (wink)
[DuMond] (the wink was from the other one)
[Cybling] Lisa, you're going to be on a panel on Friday...
[Cybling] Reviewing SF Books...is there something different about reviewing...
[ruzich] Which one?
[Cybling] novels than, say, short stories?
[DuMond] (shawn)
[AJPOP] Who is this "established author" you're collaborating with?
[DuMond] I only review short stories as part of a collection, anthology or chap book
[Cybling] novels than, say, short stories?
[DuMond] it needs to be of something that is say book length
[DuMond] with novels you have to watch more the continuity, the speed, the timing
[DuMond] and character development
[DuMond] short stories you have the same things but in a very compressed format so things can't always be developed as fully
[DuMond] sorry AJPOP, can't give the name. YET.
[rashotam] Hi again (had to run take care of an experiment), as a reviewer and author do you think that very public science projects like the human genome project are having an influence on sc fiction writing?
[DuMond] YES. just a whiff of such experiments or theories immediately show up in sc-fi and other genres
[Ryan] Lisa, I noticed that the first three chapters of your book is available on your website, which brings a question to my mind.... Putting entire books on the web seems to be getting more common. What do you think of this?
[AJPOP] How did you get into writing and reviewing in the first place? What was your "break" into the field?
[Cybling] Please hold on questions...we have two here.
[DuMond] Ryan - it is possible and its certainly going to happen but some people just will not read on computer especially if they work on computers all day
* Ryan nods.
[DuMond] AJPOP - I've been writing for about 18 years. I got started in reviewing when I saw that SFSite.com was looking for reviewers and they accepted my first submission.
[DuMond] I've been with them almost 3 years now.
[Cybling] If you have questions for our guest, please just ask. But please, let the guest answer one question before you ask another.
[Ken_of_the_White_Crane] Do you review only fiction or non-fiction as well?
* FireClaw is sorry if she's so quiet, but is doing her usual activities in the background ... can't wait w/ them since her ISP is a pretty unstable one, very, very sorry!
[DuMond] Who are these other folks and why aren't they talking?
[Cybling] LOL
[Russ] Sorry - I was trying to be patient (got a note when I logged on telling me to wait my turn)
[DuMond] Ken - I review both as long as they are related to they field and I will stretch pretty far to include certain books.
[DuMond] Russ speak now.
[Cybling] Russ...please ask your questions if you have them!
[Cybling] 8^D
[Cybling] Okay...once again, for the folks who came in late...
[Cybling] Darkers will be for sale to the public...
[Cybling] now.
[Cybling] And you can get it at Amazon com, and of course your better bookstores.
[Russ] I just wanted to know how things are going with the publication of Darkers - sorry if this was already asked, I missed a few minutes.
[DuMond] and feel free to buy as many copies as you can carry
[Cybling] LOL!
[Ken_of_the_White_Crane]
*smiles at the shameless plug
*
[Cybling] 8^D
[DuMond] Russ - its fine, its out. It will be out here at the convention, you can also get it at Hard Shell, Amazon and of course my website darkers.hikeeba.com
[DuMond] Ken - I never miss a chance for self promotion
[Ken_of_the_White_Crane] Nor should you.
* Ryan chuckles.
[Cybling] It's the wisest thing. Of course, Lisa, we'll be wanting to get you out here again in the near future to chat with us a Cybling.
[Russ] What will your next book be after Darkers?
[DuMond] Its the collaboration I mentioned earlier tentatively titled Bible Belt
[Cybling] Ah...sounds interesting...
[Cybling] can you give us any previews?
[Russ] Sorry - like I said I missed a few minutes
[DuMond] yes... involves a serial killer and an FBI agent and I am writing the part of the FBI agent and my collaborator who is male is writing the part of the serial killer
[Cybling] Sounds exciting Lisa.
[DuMond] well its a new experience because we are alternating chapters.
[Cybling] Lisa, I meant to ask you as well...do you do short fiction as well as novel length works?
[DuMond] yes. I have a short story coming out in an EOS anthology unnamed so far
[DuMond] coming out next year
[Cybling] No month yet?
[AJPOP] Any idea when we can expect the collaborative piece to be available to the public?
[DuMond] nothing yet.
[DuMond] about an year and half from this point
[Cybling] That's a long wait but not that unusual in the publishing world.
[Cybling] If you have questions for our guest, please just ask. But please, let the guest answer one question before you ask another.
[DuMond] quite true. ebooks move much faster.
[Ken_of_the_White_Crane] How much research do you put into a work like your collaboration?
[DuMond] Serial killer phenomenon and all the forensic sciences I've studied for 15 years
[DuMond] but it wasn't all in preparation for this novel
[DuMond] :-)
[ruzich] Do you both confer constantly while writing
[ruzich] your respective chapters?
[DuMond] no. not constantly. we send each other the alternating chapters and he wrote the outline.
[AJPOP] What authors do you feel have inspired your writing?
[DuMond] so far both parties are pleased.
[DuMond] Bob Shaw, John Sladek, Brian Hughes, John Wyndam to name a few
[Cybling] Folks...
[Cybling] do we have any last questions for Lisa!
[Cybling] The dealers room
*just opened

* TISP_Zalkava throws a large party and drinks too much whiskey
