February 21, 1998 -- 4 PM EST from the artist's point of view The Brave New World of Publishing
JanCyberC This is the Artists Panel and our topic for discussion this afternoon is...THE BRAVE NEW WORLD OF PUBLISHING. I'd like to invite our panelists to introduce themselves and then we'll begin the discussion. Why don't we start with you RonWalotsky...can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about you? RonWalotsky WEll, I've been in the SF field since 1967. I've done over 400 book covers. I live in Florida, with my beautiful wife, and a lot of children! gail said to keep it simple! JanCyberC LOL! DavidCherry I'm David Cherry. I am a SF/Fantasy artist/illlustrator. I became fairly well known in the 80's and early 90's for bookcovers. I have, however, expanded into other areas and currently do gaming art quite a bit. I live in Oklahoma with my lovely wife, Davette Shands, and our two daughters, Kira and Kasi. RonWalotsky uh oh. computer freeze. JanCyberC Thank you Ron and David! Lisa, can you tell us a little about yourself? LisaSnellings I'm relatively new to the scene---I attended my first convention in l990. I've been fortunate, things moved quickly for me. But I'm even more new to publishing. I didn't expect to be dealing with publishing at all....because I'm a sculptor....but have had a good many opportunities to use sculpture for illustration and more. I'm happy to be here. JanCyberC Thanks Lisa! Okay...let's open this up. Speak when the spirit moves you folks.... What are your thoughts on the BRAVE NEW WORLD OF PUBLISHING? RonWalotsky My thoughts are VERY Scarey! JanCyberC Please, elaborate Ron. RonWalotsky Between the new graphics that they are trying to push, the use of computer art, us traditional painters are having to look for other areas... DavidCherry Are we to discuss the state of the current publishing market? It is pretty grim out there right now. LisaSnellings I understand too, Ron, consider how many times CG's are replacing models in film. JanCyberC What other areas are you exploring Ron? Do you mind telling us? RonWalotsky Yea, for those of us who've made a living in publishing for 30 years, this is the most frustrating time that I can remember. I hope we don't go the way of albums! JanCyberC It's grim, David? DavidCherry One thing I notice is that in order to make even decent money as an illlustrator, more and more you have to work as an employee. I prefer to remain my own boss. LisaSnellings albums aren't gone---they've become something else RonWalotsky I agree with you David. LOL, Lisa! JanCyberC Ah, so there's pressure on artists to stop freelance work and become time clock punchers? RonWalotsky Albums: they are basically using photo's now, not using paintings. LisaSnellings I now consider my albums a collection of art---I even have a Ron Walotsky! DavidCherry Unfortunately, in today's market even a good and experienced freelancer has to take on so many small jobs to pay the bills that you end up working yourself into the ground. RonWalotsky I don't think I could work with somebody without attacking them at some point!!! I like to do my own work. lol, Lisa!@ LisaSnellings This is an age-old problem of balance for artists. Just the lingo has changed. RonWalotsky Some of the new stuff I've been doing, is like David..doing a lot of the card art. I've also started doing Art for Bike week in Daytona. Some designs for t-shirt company....Just shows you how low we'll go to make a living... JanCyberC So are fewer publishers looking for cover art, is this what I'm hearing...and do they give any reasons for this? LisaSnellings the reason is the fast advance of other, cheap available technologies. or---at least that's part of it. DavidCherry I spent a good portion of last year as lead artist designing the look and characters for a CD ROM game. It was fun and I learned a lot about the computer. RonWalotsky one reason is there's more artist's than there used to be. Less publishers, the work has to be on a very high level. LisaSnellings It's still art-----I'll never stop doing traditional sculpure though RonWalotsky Lisa, that's why I still do paintings for myself, I've been combining abstract and SF into a new series of paintings for myself that I'll try to get into gallery shows. JanCyberC Lisa...you're seeing a lot of competition from Computer Graphics Images? RonWalotsky I am redirecting myself back into that... JanCyberC CGI? LisaSnellings Yes Ron, that's why I refer to all this as a problem of balance--- DavidCherry Jan, I think another reason is that the old publishers, like Don Wollheim and Lester Del Rey, all knew the writers, the artists, and loved the literature like we do. Today those people are gone and you have large corporations who send squads of suits to make the decisions. And they don't care about you, the writers, or the genre. JanCyberC Oh that is frightening David. DavidCherry It is very true. JanCyberC We have a question here for you guys...dreamer asks: Is Card art...collector cards or greeting cards..? - RonWalotsky David, they are looking to cut prices in the industry..if they could do it in house, where people with very little talent can put covers together in a very quick period of time... Collectors art is gaiming art... DavidCherry Card art, used here, refers to art for collectible card games, like Magic: the Gathering JanCyberC Thanks for that clarification RonWalotsky Dune, Imajica.. LisaSnellings Yeah---I've even considered doing action figures for a company DavidCherry One nice thing, Ron, is that eventually what we have to sell will find its niche. JanCyberC So the publishers of gaming cards feel that their market can discern between Art and something that's just slapped together? Whereas publishers feel their market wouldn't know the difference. RonWalotsky The way they pay, it should be slapped together! But, if you sign your name to it, you always do the best art you can. I keep waiting on those 'royalties" everyone talks about. LisaSnellings I was told never to expect more than my advance DavidCherry Jan, it is not quite that easy. They want quality, of course. They often do not have the budget to afford to give us the time to do what we are capable of doing. RonWalotsky Time or money, David. The book publisher's give you time, usually. Very seldom will you get a rush with them. LisaSnellings not my experience, limited as it is. DavidCherry Yeah, Ron. I got in on the very last round of Magic cards that had the royalty deal. It was sweet. But never before or since has any company valued their artists in that way. LisaSnellings I've been rushed for every published piece so far RonWalotsky David,Lisa...what are you guys working on right now? David, you lucked out..at least, you got some sort of royalty! LisaSnellings I'm working on an anthology of shorts based on characters from my ferris wheel. Have some good writers on board so far. and, I'm learning to cast pieces in bronze DavidCherry I just did some Magic cards, a game box cover and interior cards for Rio Grande Games, a game board for Thunder Castle, and a cover for MZB Fantasy. I am currently working around 112 hours per week. Small things mostly, but that many add up. JanCyberCDreamer asks: Does anyone on the panel do magazine illustrations at this time? DavidCherry I keep thinking about calling my contacts in NY to do some more covers, but I am really really burnt on all the guff you have to take from those idiot marketing suits. LisaSnellings not right now---i have a project (hopefully) soon coming up with Carpe Nocturna RonWalotsky Well, I have to admit the last two covers were for Hustler Comix, but I've just had Janurary and feburary issues of Fantasy & Science Ficiton, Analog, Asimov's. DavidCherry Yes, Dreamer, I do from time to time. This week I just sent off a cover to MZB Fantasy magazine and will have to produce five or six interiors in the next couple of days. JanCyberC Whoa! That's a lot of work. LisaSnellings It is----none of us is sitting and waiting---that's a good thing. JanCyberC So there's still a market out there but at this point, it's a really tough one to break into if you're starting out? DavidCherry It is a lot of work. and people talk about artists as if we had it soft. JanCyberCDreamer asks: David are these interiors...line drawings or paintings? RonWalotsky Yea, you have to be on a much higher level than it used to be. You have to have a style that's unique. DavidCherry They will be line drawings. You also have to be very fast. JanCyberC So most of the magazine publishers, aside from the fanzines, are looking for work from people they are accustomed to dealing with, then? LisaSnellings That's true of art sales in general. People and publishers want what they already have. DavidCherry It is like any other industry. They are more apt to hire you if they know you personally. That is where it helps to attend SF conventions where you can meet them. RonWalotsky Yea, if they used you before, met the deadline, then they rather work with a known. It's very hard to get those first jobs, now I would think. LisaSnellings Ron had a good point---there are more artists out there too---very hard from someone new to break in. JanCyberCMarque asks: We had a chat WAY back at OMO regarding cover art and its ability to make or break a book sale for the average reader. Objectively, can any of you comment? DavidCherry On the other hand, they are looking for cheap labor, so someone just starting out may get a break. JanCyberC OMO = Omni Magazine Online on AOL LisaSnellings Marque---there are stats out there that suggest most people buy a book initially for its cover. That's at least why they pick it up in the first place. RonWalotsky I've had covers that have sold a book, especially if it's a new writer. People will pick up the covers, the new graphic covers being done- don't think people know what they are, for sure. DavidCherry I can definitely say that a great cover can do the job of selling a bad first book. But once readers learn that the writer is not good, even an outstanding cover will not save his second book. LisaSnellings True Davkd RonWalotsky Yes. LisaSnellings excuse my typing guys---new keyboard. DavidCherry Cool. JanCyberC So you do have to see the conventions and private shows as an outlet for your more intense work? DavidCherry Hey Ron. How many times have you done a cover or something and had it not come out? RonWalotsky David: I couldn't tell you how many times! Once it leaves your hand..I've had covers that were computerized, bad type, bad color. Raised covers that distroyed the details. Certain one's I'll never show because they published so poorly. They try to "over" art direct too much. LisaSnellings sometimes you don't have any control over that though DavidCherry Yes Jan, I think that we are all artists first and SF/Fantasy fans first. Illustrators second. We love a chance to do and show our personal art. We can do that at the cons. sometimes it results in quite a following. LisaSnellings i just had one computerized to death DavidCherry What do you mean/ LisaSnellings It does, David---that's why I like to spend time with my art during conventions---it's amazing what fans will tell you about what they see. RonWalotsky Lisa, doesn't that just break your heart when you do a good piece? When you get it back, it's nothing like you planned. LisaSnellings I'h God---the one I'm referring to was for the Crow anthology. My boyfriend said it ended up looking like a temporary tatoo DavidCherry What did they do to it? RonWalotsky Wow! I haven't seen anything back yet for the CROW. JanCyberC Ow! A temp tatoo? Ow! RonWalotsky Ouch! JanCyberC Speaking of skin...Marque asks: Regarding cover art, does sex sell? LisaSnellings I think they had a new system, and used everry gadget they had on it. A background was created that completely overwhelms the sculpture-- I have it on the computer---i'll email it to you. DavidCherry Oh. I see. RonWalotsky I did a story for Alan Dean Foster for the CROW. One painting, two black and whites. Think Tom Canty's art director, right? DavidCherry Strangely enough, although sex definitely sells, I keep getting clients who will not give me the latitude that people like Frazetta got early on. Last time I talked to Canty he was really getting into computer stuff. JanCyberC Your clients are looking for fully clothed images? RonWalotsky I did these jobs for Hustler Comix, they wanted me to go further than I wanted to! Ha@ LisaSnellings people in the field, and outside too, are going through a conservitive period---as opposed to the net! JanCyberC LOL. RonWalotsky The business is much more conservative than it used to be. DavidCherry Yes I guess I have the wrong clients. I love doing nudes but seldom get to. RonWalotsky They are afraid. Everything has to be politically correct, and boring. JanCyberC So it really depends on the client then...and mainstream SF/Fantasy (if there is such a thing) is avoiding the sexier covers now? How drab. RonWalotsky boring! TechCyberC ROFL! JanCyberC Hasn't the SF/Fantasy market always been a tad pscytz on this anyway? RonWalotsky I've found a couple of pieces that I've sold in russia that are more sexual. JanCyberC Sorry for the mispelling there... DavidCherry If you've noticed the suit against the bookstores alleging child porno, you'll see that that topic is in the news a lot and no one wants some band of fundamentalists tarring them with the same brush. JanCyberC Ah. RonWalotsky Early on, you were able to get away with a lot more. Matter of fact, 30's/40's you need a half dressed woman being attacked by a 6 armed, 3 legged monster. (14 eyed!) JanCyberC So the golden age of bathing beauties in re-breathers and bikinis is gone? LisaSnellings not in comics RonWalotsky Untill the cycle goes back again. It will, just hope I don't have alheimers by then! JanCyberC LOL...then illustrated books are still looking for a little more skin? DavidCherry I heard that the reason for the half clad females was that the truck drivers got to pick what went into places like the supermarket, so the publishers wanted to have something that would catch their eye and make it to the stand. JanCyberC LOL! LisaSnellings that's just it, Ron---it all cycles around again and again JanCyberCMarque asks: Is there one piece of cover art that you can definitely say is your favorite? And how about clients... is there one client that has been an absolute dream to work for over and above all others? RonWalotsky Lisa, what type of Bronzes are you working on? LisaSnellings At present, I'm just casting some of the smaller pieces I already had---but I have some monster pieces I want to do. RonWalotsky Some clients I've worked with for 10'15 years, once they change editor's and art directors, it's like starting over... DavidCherry A friend of mine in OKC just lost his business, his house, his wife, all his money, and his reputation for selling sexy comics in his store. So there is pressure being applied to that industry as well. RonWalotsky there is NO Loyalty. Oh lord! RonWalotsky They wouldn't make it in Florida! JanCyberC You mean a comix dealer was shut down in OK? RonWalotsky I gotta keep my eye out for the sex police! If I do dirty drawings for Hustler Comix, I'm going to be peering out my window now! I'm not paranoid, ya know! JanCyberC I think we all do, Ron....LOLOL. DavidCherry I think my favorite art director is Dave Stevenson at Ballantine Books in NY. He and Ruth Ross have always been professional on every level. RonWalotsky ACTION gail! Check the closet! DavidCherry Ron. Did you check out my inking job in XXXenophile? LisaSnellings me neither---but will RonWalotsky He's always been very nice to talk to, but havent seen any work from David. No, David. First I've heard of it. JanCyberC Something that's not been asked, yet, Agents. Are they necessary for artists? If you're starting out in the field should you run if one approaches you? LisaSnellings that's a very good question i'd rather not answer RonWalotsky Agents: No, because if an agent approaches you, is a professional, he can open doors that you can't get into. JanCyberC LOL. Okay Lisa. DavidCherry Last time I did a cover for Dave S. he loved it, the publilsher loved it. It was in all the ads and then got pulled and replaced at the last minute because some marketing nimrod didn't like the fact that it had orientals on the cover [which it had to to be true to the book]. That was pretty bold and cold considering that Dave and his publisher are both oriental. RonWalotsky But You do have to be careful with them. I've had them on and off, I do almost everything myself...and gail! Strange David! But not surprised. The most powerful people in publishing are the guys that sell the books to the stores. DavidCherry Typical is more like it from my experience. RonWalotsky Tech, your too quiet! TechCyberC LOL working. RonWalotsky ::G:: JanCyberC Tech is very busy posting to the Balcony right now....but look at the time! Folks...one hour is about all we keep our guests duct taped to their chairs. And we've nearly reached that point. DavidCherry Lisa, I am jealous that you are getting to put together a book. I wish I had the time. I think, though, that that is a very smart thing to do. It is much better to create your own product than constantly be hired gun at low pay for others. JanCyberC Ron, Lisa, David...would you mind if we went to un-moderated chat at this time? LisaSnellings I agree---but it's hard to get a project like this done RonWalotsky I don't mind. LisaSnellings we're aiming to have it by World Horror 1999 DavidCherry I'm still OK. I just had another cup of coffee and am awake for a while. RonWalotsky I'll keep my fingers crossed! LisaSnellings ok janice JanCyberC Okay...I'm taking off Moderation at this point. Moderation is off. Marque :::stretching::: Thanks for taking off the straightjackets, Jan! dreamer whew JanCyberC Folks...please feel free to chat at will... RonWalotsky I'm still working on my book "Inner Visions" have it with Collins & Brown. crAtvar ...so the nun said "pass me the bananas" LisaSnellings thanks Ron! do. I've been really fortunate---Neil Gaiman opened a lot of doors for me when he turned the tables.... DavidCherry Lisa. Who is the publisher? Do you have that lined up or are you going to need to go shopping. JanCyberC Ron, Lisa, David, we'd love to have you stay for this portion of the chat, but when you have to leave just let us know. LisaSnellings and wrote stories based on work I'd already done LisaSnellings we havent signed with anybody---part of that depends on s. king---with him, it would be Penquin RonWalotsky That's been a good process for you Lisa. Marque Ron/Lisa/David, where might I find a published collection of your artwork, if one exists? LisaSnellings It has----Ron. RonWalotsky Marque, Look for "INFINATE WORLDS" by Vincent Defate. Marque <===admits that art is a VERY big influence in purchasing decisions --- Thanks, Ron! RonWalotsky Just came out, on the history of Science Fiction art. LisaSnellings Marque---No full collection yet---but working on a coffee table book with Gaiman TechCyberC :::stretching brb: DavidCherry I have an art book called Imagination: The Art and Technique of David A. Cherry out since 1987, but I think it is becoming a collector's item at this time. I have been meaning to do another for the last 5 years but can't find a decent publisher. JanCyberC It doesn't matter if you're a known, award winner...it's always hard to find a publisher for art?
............................LisaSnellings left ............. :( JanCyberC Oops...lost lisa. Marque Wonderful, Lisa and David. LOL! Poor Tech... numbutt syndrome must have gotten to him. ;) RonWalotsky LOL! dreamer David...what's MZB..stand for as in MZB Fantasy Magazine...pardon my ignorance..8^) JanCyberC LOLOL. TechCyberC (babk) JanCyberC Re's Tech.
...........................TonyM58 joined............. :) RonWalotsky David, what was that XXX thing that you mentioned earlier? JanCyberC Hi Tony! Glad you could join us. dreamer Hey Tony crAtvar ACTION waves to TonyM58
...........................LisaSnellings joined............. :) TonyM58 Hello everyone DavidCherry sorry Dreamer. My fault. It is Marion Zimmer Bradley's Fantasy Magazine. That is so long and hard to remember that we all just use the initials. JanCyberC Tony, we've got Ron Walotsky and David Cherry, award winning SF Artists with us today. dreamer oh JanCyberC Re's Lisa! LisaSnellings sorry about that!!! DavidCherry Hi Tony. JanCyberC No problem, glad you were able to rejoin us so quickly Lia. JanCyberC Lisa. LisaSnellings hi Tony dreamer great thanks...David DavidCherry No problem Dreamer. Are you an artist yourself? JanCyberC At WindyCon this year I noticed that a lot of the art in the show seemed to be "fan" quality. Do you folks concentrate on WorldCon? LisaSnellings I do---World Horror, World Fantasy TechCyberC Hello Tony! LisaSnellings It's gotten too had to do the smaller cons for me RonWalotsky World con is a big show, so you'll find more professional's there. more Editors/art directors there. dreamer Yes...I have a drawing on Cybling's Alien Valentines contest if you like to check it out...( name: Adamandia) RonWalotsky We do World Fantasy, Dragon Con...World Con, very few small cons. LisaSnellings will do, dreamer dreamer...thanks JanCyberC So again, it's a matter of time...where you put your resources. DavidCherry Jan, I used to do 10 cons and more each year. But now I do only one or two plus World Con. This year I have to go since our good friend Michael Whelan is going to be Artist Guest of Honor and my sister C. J. Cherryh will be wrtier Guest of Honor. RonWalotsky Lisa, will you be at Dragon Con this year. JanCyberC That's a good reason. JanCyberC 10 Cons is a lot of conventions to plan, prepare, and execute. It's like holding a little show 10 times a year! LisaSnellings Can you blieve it? this will be the first DragonCon I've missed in 8 years RonWalotsky We'll miss you. LisaSnellings I'll see you at the World Con
............................crAtvar left ............. :( DavidCherry Yes, Dreamer, I will check that out right away. BTW, don't let all our grousing about how tough the market is now keep you from entering and putting your portfolio around. There is always room for good art and good artists. RonWalotsky Great! JanCyberC Oops. Lost our Atvar. TechCyberC I'm going to have to make the next Austin area con you folks come to. LisaSnellings I'll have my entire carnival there LisaSnellings should be fun JanCyberC I'm looking forward to meeting you all at the Chicago World Con in 2000. RonWalotsky Yea! Did you finish that last piece, roller coaster? LisaSnellings Anyone doing the World Horror in Phoenix? Marque "Carnival?" LOL! Interesting choice of words, Lisa. dreamer yes...I know...my dad's an artist..(fine art)...I know all about the art market...ugh RonWalotsky Don't do world horror. LisaSnellings The roller coaster is up and running in McLean! JanCyberC Unfortunately I must be surgically severed from the computer so I only do WindyCon at this point. RonWalotsky LOL Jan! LisaSnellings It's close---if I don't so a show somewhere, I'll forget how!!! RonWalotsky I can't wait to see it. dreamer Jan is Windy Con going to be in Schaumberg again next year..? LisaSnellings Im starting a peep show piece next
...........................crAtvarLoathesAOL joined............. :) JanCyberC I should remind everyone that examples of our panelists art are up on their Cybling Link sites... crAtvarLoathesAOL ACTION wave at everybody in the room! DavidCherry I have never been to a Dragon Con. Keep meaning to but don't. I will probably be at the world con in Chicago. so I will certanly see you there. dreamer Poor Atvar JanCyberC and you can view them by clicking on the Artist's Palette on the Front page at www.cybling.com RonWalotsky David, we only get to see you guys at World cons anymore... RonWalotsky Then we're all off and running in different directions. DavidCherry I know. That is what getting married and very settled down does to us. LisaSnellings Yeah---the cons become like family reunions JanCyberC See....I knew it was a good idea to get the three of you in a cyberroom together. You're all so busy you don't get to see each other F2F anymore. RonWalotsky The cons are the only place that we get to see our contemporaries in the field. one of the main reason's we attend. DavidCherry That is the truth. RonWalotsky Your more correct than you realize, Jan. RonWalotsky We knew Lisa from her begining... crAtvarLoathesAOL When she was born? LisaSnellings that contact can be very important---I'm missing it lately JanCyberC LOL...Atvar...you *know* I don't have my ornamental pillow with me here...just the shotgun. RonWalotsky Her birhtday is December 19th! LisaSnellings Ron was the first pro artist I met. crAtvarLoathesAOL LOL Marque Folks, it's been VERY interesting talking with you and gaining some insight into the art side of SF/Fantasy but I need to give my buns a break (and smear Anbesol on my killer molar). Thank you all SO much for being here today, and I hope to check out your collections if and when! Take care!!! LisaSnellings His approachibility and encouragement helped me go on JanCyberC Later Marque! DavidCherry My fellow artists are more dear to me than most of the people I grew up with. Thanks to the con circuit we have met, know each other's families, and keep in touch between times with phone calls as best we can. JanCyberC Thanks for the questions. RonWalotsky It's great to see someone take off, to improve to such an extent! dreamer bye Marq Marque Sure thing. See you all... :::poooooof!::: TonyM58 bye Marque
............................Marque left ............. :( JanCyberC So, Lisa, Ron and Gail mentored you in a way?
............................TechCyberC left ............. :(
...........................TechCyberC joined............. :) DavidCherry Yeah, Lisa. Pretty soon you'll be like me, still struggling to make it, only to turn around and discover that you did and that you are now old and venerable. RonWalotsky The art world is like Family. I just try to make her see that she was going in the right direction. she did ALL the work! RonWalotsky LOLOLOL!!!! JanCyberC Tony, I'm curious, if you could compare covers of SF/Fantasy books in the UK to those published in the USA, would you say it's more or less important over there? TechCyberC LOL RonWalotsky Being famous and RICH are TWO seperate Fields!!!! JanCyberC Too too true. LisaSnellings Yeah---but it might not have happened if I'd talked to the wrong person ---we have to remember to try to listen to new artists DavidCherry You got that right TechCyberC Is art a family thing? TechCyberC IE you help the new kids along? LisaSnellings try to---there are no good books on how to do this RonWalotsky When your working with people in the field in Art, there's a closeness that happens. Most of the people I know will help other artist's in the field. RonWalotsky I've had it done for me, I've done it for others. LisaSnellings our work physically isolates us, so that becomes really important RonWalotsky Don't try and keep anything secret about what we're doing, we're very open about it. DavidCherry Boy is art a familly thing at our house. I do most of the art and Davette does the books, shipping, etc. when she is not traveling to Dallas for acting auditions. But she just won a Chesley Award for one of her drawings. LisaSnellings sometimes it's the only feedback I get for long periods of time TonyM58 I'm not really expert on covers, but I am an impulse buyer and the cover does affect me then. I don't know how a US cover would differ from ours. JanCyberC Thanks Tony. dreamer Is her name really Davette? RonWalotsky The US covers seem to be more Super Realistic right now. more photo realistic. DavidCherry Often our cover have wonderful British artists like Mark Harrison and Jim Burns. RonWalotsky Not as impressionistic, from the few covers I've seen in England. RonWalotsky Those british artist's are working in the US because they are that tight. DavidCherry Yes, Dave and Davette. It is her middle name. I am not sure where her mother came up with it. dreamer cool...like Evelyn Waugh's wife Evelyn...;) TechCyberC I bought an extra copy of Brunner's as it had an Escher on the cover. TechCyberC THE SHEEP LOOK UP or some such. LisaSnellings ok guys---I'm otta here----drop me some email dreamer bye Lisa TonyM58 bye TechCyberC Later Lisa! THANKS! JanCyberC Thanks Lisa! crAtvarLoathesAOL bye Lisa JanCyberC Ron, you have to take off now too? RonWalotsky bye Lisa, write home! DavidCherry Ron, are you friends with Armand Cabrera? He turned away from doing covers and went to loser works, more fine art and seems to be doing well. He has really grown as an artist now that he is doing what he likes. LisaSnellings I promise---have my own computer now RonWalotsky Yes, we are signing off. It's been fun, thanks for having me! crAtvarLoathesAOL bye Ron, bye Gail DavidCherry Bye Lisa great hearing from you. JanCyberC Thanks Ron! Thanks Gail! TechCyberC THANKS ron and Gail! RonWalotsky Bye David, Lisa! dreamer thanks Ron..bye TechCyberC Make that r a R!
............................LisaSnellings left ............. :( RonWalotsky Keep in touch, guys! Thanks For having us, Jan. It was like sitting in the bar talking to you guys at the con!!!! DavidCherry Bye Ron. Lots of love to you and the family. RonWalotsky ::poof:::
............................RonWalotsky left ............. :( JanCyberC Mwahahaha...David we have you all to ourselves now. dreamer ::g:: JanCyberC Please do stay with us as long as you can....though we understand you have work to finish. crAtvarLoathesAOL LOCK THE DOORS! TechCyberC :::looks intently at David::: DavidCherry My daughter just came up the stairs to tell me the time but I will try to stay on a little longer if you like. DavidCherry Any questions? dreamer Is it time for supper at the Cherry household...? JanCyberC Would love to keep you here...and don't be a stranger...Ron and Gail visit with us often in chat. It makes a good break from the routine. JanCyberC Recharges the batteries. crAtvarLoathesAOL and we do have GREAT chatters here! TechCyberC Slap us around... whatever. DavidCherry Not supper time, but I sent Kira for a new cup of coffee. And I do have two pieces of art to finish by dawn. JanCyberC David you mentioned earlier that an artist trying to break into the field should have a good portfolio... JanCyberC would you consider a website to be a good idea or not? DavidCherry I did one this morning and ran 3 miles. JanCyberC As a version of a portfolio. DavidCherry Yes, a website is becoming essential. DavidCherry There are companies who you cannot solicit unless you send them the portfolio digitally. crAtvarLoathesAOL Really? TechCyberC Interesting. JanCyberC Hmmm...but there are still some who demand paper copies of the art?
...........................crbaryon joined............. :) dreamer digitally..via disk or email? DavidCherry Still, nothing beats knowing the publishers personally. so I do recommend going to World con and showing your art where they can see it. Then go to the evening parties and meet them. JanCyberC Hi Bary. dreamer Hey baryon crbaryon HJoi Gang TechCyberC Hi Bary! crAtvarLoathesAOL ACTION waves to crbaryon DavidCherry usually email dreamer ah JanCyberC Bary, Lisa and Ron had to leave, but we still have David Cherry with us. DavidCherry Hi. crbaryon Hi DAvid, Love your work TechCyberC On a side note we upload "artwork" er board layouts now. DavidCherry Thank you. Have we met? crbaryon May have at Dragon Con in Atlanta JanCyberC Barry, why don't you introduce yourself. crbaryon I do the fanzine Baryon DavidCherry I guess not then. I keep meaning to go to Dragon con but never make it. crbaryon I'm sure you would have a gtreat time. DavidCherry Great. good luck in the Fanzine Hugos. crbaryon Thanks. JanCyberC Bary, we were talking earlier that it's getting more difficult for unknown artists to break into the book jacket/magazine market.... JanCyberC and that fanzines may be one way to do it. crbaryon Have had fanzine covers by Two winners of Illos of the Future contest DavidCherry I think that publishing in fanzines can be a definite help. It also gives practice meeting deadlines. DavidCherry Tony? Dreamer? Are you all submitting to publishers? crbaryon Gives good exposure to a range of readers JanCyberC David, does it help a young artist get exposure...or is Convention Attendance the only tried and true way to make important contacts?
............................TonyM58 left ............. :( dreamer no...not yet.. JanCyberC Ooops...lost our UK man. DavidCherry To tell the truth, Fanzines are great for getting a following in the fanish public but the busy NY execs who you need to hire you do not always have time to read them JanCyberC I see....and the suits are taking over in NY. JanCyberC But they are still doing conventions. dreamer hmm
...........................TonyM58 joined............. :) JanCyberC Re's Tony. DavidCherry If you want to catch their eye, you have to do paintings that look like what they are already buying and go to NY personally to drop off the portfolios. crbaryon Suits make it hard for Artist and Writer. Looking at bottom line always TechCyberC Re's Tony! JanCyberC Yikes. TonyM58 slight glitch there dreamer WB...Tony TechCyberC Do those suits do cons? DavidCherry Very true, Baryon DavidCherry The suit do World Con and World Fantasy Con. sometimes other big regionals like Norwescon. crbaryon Suits do DreagonCon, but small press is growing some too. JanCyberC That has to be *very* hard on a new artist...making a pilgramage to NY. JanCyberC Atvar, you need to set up a bed and breakfast. crAtvarLoathesAOL Will Do! crAtvarLoathesAOL FREE Roaches with every night stayed! JanCyberC LOLOL! dreamer eew DavidCherry World Fantasy con is great for meeting the suits. It is only 700 people, almost all pro writers, artists, and publishers, and you can get into all the parties without having to know someone important to get you in the door. crAtvarLoathesAOL maybe even a 2 for 1 ??? dreamer none for me thanks.. JanCyberC So World Fantasy Con is a definate must for new artists. DavidCherry Yes,\ JanCyberC A lot easier than storming the corporate walls. DavidCherry world Fantasy is the absolute best for meeting the right people. JanCyberC And getting your work shown, if at all possible, in the Art Show there is good as well. DavidCherry True JanCyberC David...I'm feeling guilty....I know you've got a couple of pieces to finish tonight...Folks do we have any other questions for David? dreamer no...that's alright DavidCherry It is a great art show. Mostly all pros. Real talent and really inspiring. crbaryon The annual SPECTRUM volume is also a good place to get yuor art into.
