The June 2000 Q&A

Yvonne: Okay. So whatcha wanna talk about?
Starlit: Life, the Universe, Everything
Yvonne: Life: Is Okay. The Universe: Is Big. Everything: Is too much to deal with in an hour and a half.
Starlit: compress it
Yvonne: Everything: Means you have to do it all in 8 hours. How's that?
Starlit: lacks something in the translation
Yvonne: (g)
Buzzy: What is your opinion on e-books and e-publishing, Yvonne?
Yvonne: Okay, this'll probably be a couple-of-parter answer. e-books and e-publishing are such a great concept, but there are a couple of real drawbacks. First you can publish for really not much money. Because of that, however, a lot of the e-publishers aren't as discriminating as they should be. They also don't have the editorial experience that the paper publishers have, which they kind of got over the years via the hard way. Secondly, to be frank, the authors aren't making any money. And don't tell me about that King guy, because I don't get his checks in my mailbox. ha ha. People have their little readers, but the bottom line is they don't want to give up their books. They don't like reading, for hours at a time, on the screen, no matter what color you make the background. I tried selling AfterAge on a disk, and it bombed-- this despite over 100 people who said, in advance, that they would buy it when it was ready. The problem was I wasn't willing to let it be printed out and have copies of the manuscript floating around out there, possibly in the hands of unscrupulous people. Since they couldn't print it out, only about 12 people or so bought it... this after we invested $500 plus in software. Okay, I'm done. I'm out of breath. ha ha You guys would be in trouble if I didn't type fast.
Buzzy: I agree with you about shoddy editing.
AtkButterfly: Tell us about your latest book.
Yvonne: Latest book is THAT'S NOT MY NAME, which is a deviation for me. It's a suspense story, with zero supernatural in it. It's about a man who kidnaps a woman because he believes that she's his missing wife.
KBundy: Did you do a lot of promotion for AfterAge?
Yvonne: As for AfterAge -- I did do a lot of promotion, yes. It was my first book and I didn't have that much going on in terms of writing deadlines, etc. I was at that time (see how life repeats itself) living with my Dad and so also didn't have a house to take care of.
Garrett: Did you try DEAD TIMES at a mainstream publisher before taking it to Dark Tales?
Yvonne: DeadTimes was intended to be my second novel. So yes, Bantam read it, but specifically NOT as part of the contract I had at the time. Because of its odd format, my agent knew they wouldn't take it (and they didn't) and he didn't want the rejection to count as part of the contract. It's really not suitable for a mainstream publisher. Plug Time: If you want to check out DeadTimes a la the computer, you can do so at Bookface.com.
Buzzy: Do you think that the true home for horror fiction is with the small publishers...such as Darktales?
Yvonne: I'm not sure. Leisure is doing really well in bringing back horror, but I don't know if they carry it all by themselves in the main market. The other major publishers are still shy about it. The over-publishing of previous decades (of dreck) really hurt us in that respect.
JanCyberC: Yvonne...what made you decide to take a crack at the "Thriller" type novel?
Yvonne: You know, it wasn't really a conscious decision. I just always had that idea for THAT'S NOT MY NAME. Technically, THAT'S NOT MY NAME (here we go again) was supposed to be my third novel, right after DeadTimes. But at the time, my contract specified horror, and the publisher at Bantam (back then it was Lou Aronica) wanted GLOBAL horror, which of course doesn't describe THAT'S NOT MY NAME at all. I had about 200 pages of it written and it got set aside for years and years and years. As it turns out, that was a good thing, I think. It enabled me to make it a better book and get input on the psychological aspects of it from a good friend who knew what the heck I was talking about.
Garrett: Didn't you mention in your interview with Victor Heck that your contract with Bantam is over? Are you looking for a new publisher?
Yvonne: Yes, that's correct. Right now I don't really have anything to shop around with anyway.
AdamPepper: so did you find that you had to force yourself to write something to fit into bantam's concept of horror
Yvonne: Bantam wasn't interested in a proposal I gave them, so I've started working on a different novel, a horror one, for myself.
JanCyberC: Oh excellent.
Garrett: The ones you do for yourself are the best.
Yvonne: Adam, it wasn't much "force" -- at the time what I had pretty much fit. deadrush was a stretch, but it made it because the zombies "could have" spread.
JanCyberC: How far along are you with this new novel and is there a working title?
Yvonne: I've got about 50 pages or so of it written, but it's fully and extensively outlined. It's called MIRROR ME.
AdamPepper: so is bantam no longer supporting horror?
Yvonne: Adam, Bantam was never a huge supporter of horror to begin with. They took AfterAge because of the global aspect, but the publisher has moved elsewhere.
AdamPepper: I see, but it seems like you had a fairly long relationship with bantam
KBundy: Do you always come up with your title first?
Yvonne: No, Kim. Usually I come up with the idea and fiddle around until I get a title that fits. Change it a lot until it's right.
JanCyberC: Interesting title, Mirror Me. Speaking of which ... Dead Times is also an interesting title. Can you tell us a little about this book as well?
Yvonne: The DeadTimes title actually fits the book perfectly. It's about a woman who sells her soul to Satan for the ability to live nine more lives. She bounces from time period to time period -- not necessarily always forward and not necessarily as she expects to -- in living out those lives. Kim, there's a perfect example re: titles --When I first started playing with that idea, I actually called it "Nine Lives" or something ridiculous. Obviously everyone would have thought it was about a cat. hee hee
Garrett: Why don't you consider it mainstream?
Yvonne: DeadTimes?
Garrett: Yep.
Starlit: a book with zombies "mainstream"?
Yvonne: Because of the format. Mainstream publishers look at this and consider it to be more like 9 or 10 novellas strung together, all about the same character. DeadTimes doesn't have zombies. You're thinking about deadrush. But DeadTimes =does= have vampires.
JanCyberC: Ooooh.
Yvonne: And the KKK, and voodoo, and prostitution, etc., etc.
Garrett: Have they got something against "damn good?" I think it's your best yet.
Yvonne: Thanks, Garrett. I had a lot of years to polish it up! GA
Starlit: same question, only substitute that for zombies
Yvonne: Well, actually, Final Impact was called science fiction and Red Shadows was called mainstream, and both have the equivalent of vampires in them, and an equivalent for werewolves, sort of. Still, it's more the format that prevented it from being "mainstream".
AdamPepper: are there publishers, do you think, that are receptive to horror that doesn't contain vampires, zombies, etc
Yvonne: Oh, definitely.
AtkButterfly: Do you make up your own rules for vampires, zombies, and such or try to follow what's been established by other writers?
Yvonne: I tend to make up my own stuff, although established rules usually form the groundwork. You have the rules... so bend them already. The only thing is that if you do make up a new rule, then you can't break it yourself -- you have to abide by it. At least in the course of that particular book.
JanCyberC: LOL... Yvonne...here's something that's been bothering me for a bit. Immortality... is it possible for your immortals to become bored?
Yvonne: I think that would depend on the immortal. :)
Garrett: If your immortals got bored, maybe the readers would too.
Yvonne: Did you ever watch Highlander? That series, I thought, was a good study in the effects of immortality.
JanCyberC: Well put. Closer to home...if you were immortal, would *you* get bored.
Yvonne: That depends on if I could get a certain someone to be immortal with me. ::ahem::
KBundy: I'm under the impression none of your stuff is a series. Ever considered doing them?
Yvonne: Well, Final Impact and Red Shadows are sort of a series, since Red Shadows is the follow up. I'd vaguely planned to do a third book for it, since everyone asked for it, and even had a title and a vague idea about what to do with it. Then Bantam kind of canceled out on me, so that kind of faded. Too bad.
KBundy: Shows you what I know! :D
Garrett: And you're doing a BUFFY series too, yes?
Yvonne: Well, Buffy is a series all its own, of course. I've done The Willow Files I ... a short story in the first upcoming anthology, How I Survived My Summer Vacation (my story is called "Uncle Dead and the Fourth of July") Paleo, which comes out in September, and I'm just finishing up The Willow Files II now.
Starlit: It seems to me that your comment about rules is applicable to ANY sf or fantasy. The "mighty leap out of the pit" is plain bad writing
Yvonne: Starlit -- that's right. Your readers just end up feeling cheated if you break the rules you made yourself.
AdamPepper: can you write something like BUFFY with the same passion as your own originals? (not to get you in trouble)
Yvonne: Adam -- probably not. It's a matter of not being able to do what you really want to with the characters, especially in Buffy because the series is so closely monitored. They watch, literally, what she wears (I've been told that Buffy "would never wear a gold sweater"),
AdamPepper: wow, that is a bit stifling
Yvonne: how they talk, who does what. The original novels are particularly hard for me in that respect because I feel I can't do what I want. My first idea for a Buffy original novel was turned down because of just that -- I wouldn't be allowed to do what I'd suggested. So.
AdamPepper: thanks, for the honest answer
Yvonne: But it's still fun to be a little "part" of the Big Buffy Universe. (g) In fact, if you can get your hands on the June 29th issue of FEMME FATALES, there's an article in there about Nancy Holder and moi, complete with photos.
Starlit: I would think that restriction applies to any of the books based on TV series -- Trek, X-Files, etc.
Yvonne: Yes, I think it does. I've heard that X-Files is also difficult to deal with, because Chris Carter is picky. I know from experience that this also applies to Babylon 5.
AdamPepper: that's probably why I personally cant get into any of those types of novels, some people love them though.
Yvonne: It depends on the novel, I think. Some people just write them too quickly. I put as much effort into a novelization as I do in a solo; I just can't quite write what I want and I have to use their characters.
JanCyberC: Yvonne, you mentioned earlier that the time between your first start on THAT'S NOT MY NAME gave you a chance to do some research. I'm assuming that means you weren't personally kidnapped?
Yvonne: Please. Who'd watch to kidnap Big Bag O'Trouble Me?
JanCyberC: LOL. Then can you tell us what kind of research you did? And PLEASE, your new photo is quite glam.
Yvonne: It wasn't so much research, but a chance to step back from what I had planned for the book and just make it better. I changed the characters a bit, added scenes, added new characters, rearranged things. The novel it is now bears little resemblance to the original outline.
Garrett: You're the only author published by Dark Tales I haven't seen post on the list. Do you lurk?
Yvonne: No. I have a couple of friends on there and they tell me they get, sometimes, hundreds of messages. I'd pull my .357 out of the nightstand and shoot my computer if that happened. ha ha
JanCyberC: LOL.
Garrett: It's true.
AdamPepper: that would be expensive
KBundy: Do you think the internet can hamper a writer then?
Yvonne: True. But satisfying. ::ahem::
JanCyberC: Is Dark Tales a news group?
Yvonne: Jan -- Yes. Kim -- Yes. But only in the sense that it can be a serious time burner. It also has a LOT of advantages.
Garrett: The big question-- are you ready for Necon?
Yvonne: Of course! Are you?
JanCyberC: When is Necon?
Garrett: Like I had to ask!
Yvonne: Necon is July 13, 14, 15, 16.
AdamPepper: I'm going for my first time, I no nobody and have no idea what to expect
JanCyberC: Second important question, will you be going to ChiCon?
AdamPepper: know nobody I should say
Yvonne: Adam -- you'll have a great time. It's like summer camp.: Jan, yes I will be at ChiCon. Although with that many people, how do you find anyone?
JanCyberC: I'll be easy to find, lol.
Yvonne: Plug Time: Necon: ~http://www.para-net.com/~necon
Garrett: Adam-- after Necon you'll never be able to say you know no one again.
Yvonne: Yours truly does the web site.
JanCyberC: Excellent, thanks so much.
AdamPepper: your webpage has some great graphics, do you do that yourself
Yvonne: Yes, I do the web site myself. Thanks. :)
JanCyberC: Love the java lake script.
Yvonne: Thanks. It's a nifty effect and doesn't eat up too much memory.
Garrett: Did you enjoy the Making a Living as a Writer panel at WHC this year?
Yvonne: Yes. Always a pleasure to sit next to Harlan. ha ha
Garrett: I'll never refer to you as less than "the beautiful Yvonne Navarro" again.
Yvonne: Some pretty good points made on that about making a living -- or not -- as a writer. Garrett, why on earth not? ::ahem::
Garrett: 'Cause Harlan will get me!
Yvonne: I'll protect you. I'll just have to put in earplugs first. hee hee
JanCyberC: LOL
Garrett: Actually, he spared me. He was going to go after Barry Hoffman.
Yvonne: 'Tis true.
KBundy: What made you decide to be a writer?
Yvonne: My Mom actually first got me into it. I gave her a book to read, one I admired a lot. She read it, and when she gave it back to me she said "You could do this." So it's all her fault.
JanCyberC: Yvonne, there are a couple of curious questions left on your mini-message board ... do you know Keifer Sutherland at all?
KBundy: :)
Yvonne: Uh-oh -- I think I've been caught. I haven't been there in a few. I did try the other day, but couldn't connect. Alas, I do not know Keifer Sutherland. Should I? :)
JanCyberC: Not to my knowledge...someone named Wayne thinks you should though. LOL. Never mind.
Starlit: Do you have any particular habits/rituals in your writing?
Yvonne: Hmmm.
AdamPepper: this sounds juicy
Yvonne: ::ahem:: Not really, though I suppose if I tried to duplicate it somewhere else I'd discover a whole bunch of preferences. I like music but nothing with words -- otherwise I can't concentrate and try to sing along (then the windows break).
JanCyberC: LOL
Yvonne: I like a lot of light, and I get munchies so I have to be careful. I like my work area pretty uncluttered. Messy spaces make me nuts.
JanCyberC: Easiest way to kill a mouse is chocolate chip cookie crumbs.
Yvonne: I would like to have a dog to keep my feet warm. Don't tend to eat fattening stuff -- I generally go for Skittles. Sugar headache.
Starlit: just being in the same room with chocolate makes you gain
Yvonne: Then you have to work it off!
Garrett: How many conventions do you do in the average year?
Yvonne: The three regulars are World Horror, World Fantasy, and Necon. Sometimes I'll pop in at WindyCon and CapriCon here in Chicago. year I'm registered at ChiCon.
Garrett: You were the only person I saw at all three I did last year.
Yvonne: There's a limit to the budget for registration and travel. I get invited to more but frankly unless they foot the bill I can't afford to go.
Needlstar: Do you always plot out the stories first, or do you create the characters and situation and then let them go?
Yvonne: Generally I have a story idea first, a general idea of what I want to happen. Then I create the character, and sometimes =that's= what will change a storyline.
JanCyberC: Speaking of working off weight gain... how are the Martial Arts coming? Have you graduated from kicking bug butt?
Yvonne: Sure. Now I can stomp small mice.
JanCyberC: LOL. How long before you move up to larger mammals?
Yvonne: But seriously, the martial arts training is coming along well, thank you.
Garrett: I think she can take Harlan!
Yvonne: Jan -- I've graduated up to a green belt now. If all goes well, I'm hoping for a promotion at training tomorrow.
JanCyberC: Congratulations.
Yvonne: Thanks. :)
AdamPepper: you are a scary woman!!
Needlstar: Good Luck
Yvonne: There are fun pictures on my web site, off the cafe.htm page.
AdamPepper: are you breaking bricks with your forehead?
AdamPepper: every writers group I belong to they obsess on characters, it sounds like you start with plot
Yvonne: Characters are EXTREMELY important, but I don't start a story with "a girl with blonde hair who's crabby". I start with an idea, usually a what-if question, and then work from there.
JanCyberC: BTW, folks, speaking of Yvonne's being scary, I believe she'll be with us again next Friday as a contributor to the CD anthology Extremes.
Yvonne: This Friday thing could be a habit.
Garrett: Best anthology I've read this year so far, EXTREMES.
Yvonne: And a fine CD anthology it is! ::ahem::
AdamPepper: is that a BAH antho?
Yvonne: Yes, Adam it is. That's a nice thing to say, Garrett.
JanCyberC: Speaking of Anthologies...are you submitting a lot of shorter than novel length work these days?
Garrett: Only true. You get to hear your voice on the intro!
Yvonne: (g) Not really, Jan. I have started a story though -- I've got something like a half dozen requests/deadlines and have really really really fallen behind. Thankfully I've finally come up with some ideas for them. But the time is a BIG problem.
JanCyberC: Are most of these for Anthologies or magazines, Yvonne?
Yvonne: Mostly anthologies, one magazine. In the midst of that the Willow Files II is due on July 11th. And I really really really really want to work on MIRROR ME.
JanCyberC: Ah.
Yvonne: There's also a fully outlined thing for DIE WITH ME begging to be written.
AdamPepper: bear with me, a CD antho, is that like book on tape kind of thing?
Yvonne: More like a book on CD, except the CD format gives you lots of extras, like photos, audio and video from the various contributors. It's very cool.
AdamPepper: sounds it
Yvonne: Of course, I wanted to shoot Brian about that whole audio thing because I lost the sound on my computer trying to do it for him, but that's a whole 'nother hour of complaining. ha ha
Garrett: I reviewed it in Hellnotes this week.
Yvonne: Cool! What else-- oh, DIE WITH ME wants to be written, which is the one Bantam passed on but I still like it. It would be straight suspense, no supernatural. MIRROR ME has supernatural stuff. And of course I've promised Hinchberger I would give more serious thought to a sequel for AfterAge. He's only been waiting for a half decade. He's going to re-release AfterAge. And I have this most excellent idea for a vampire novel... a different one. I think I need to take more vitamins. And of course there's the fully outlined science fictiony suspense time travel novel that's kind of overwhelming in the research area.
Garrett: Good! Afterage was the first of yours I read. Been out of print for a while, hasn't it?
Yvonne: Yes, AfterAge went out of print about... agh. 4 or 5 years ago?
Garrett: Sounds like you've got plenty of ideas; you just need more hours in the day!
AdamPepper: you can always sleep less!
Yvonne: Adam, I did that for years when I worked -- survived on 5 hours or less a night. I've found I'm more creative with 7 hours. Not to mention a whole lot less cranky.
AdamPepper: we like you a little feisty, someone needs to keep up with Ellison
Yvonne: Golly, I thought he was going to have a heart attack on a couple of those panels!
JanCyberC: What is it about vampires that you find so compelling, Yvonne?
Yvonne: They're so darned versatile -- it's that rule thing. You can bend the rules to however you need them to be (again, as long as you stick with them). They live forever, they can be the perfect monster... or hero. Plus, to me, vampires don't always mean a thief of blood. The concept of a vampire could be someone who takes almost anything from his/her/its victims. I've changed it many a time in stories.
JanCyberC: folks...why don't we give Yvonne a round of applause and thanks now, for taking time away from her writing to join us to answer our questions.
* JanCyberC applauds loudly
Yvonne: Thanks, everyone. :)
Garrett: Thanks, Yvonne! For the chat and what's in the mail.
Yvonne: You're welcome. :)
Needlstar: thanks Yvonne.... what are the URLs for the web pages again.
Yvonne: Plug Time!
JanCyberC: 8^D
Yvonne: My site is ~http://www.para-net.com/~ynavarro Necon is the same except it's ~necon. It's full though -- filled up Weds. night.
AdamPepper: can I ask you a question about etiquette at Necon?
Yvonne: Off my site, you can get to everything easily -- take your "quick pick" so to speak, if you just click on the Announcement Page. That's gives kind of a text run of everything going on.
Garrett: Doing any of the Olympic events?
Yvonne: Nah. I want basketball. Or hand to hand combat. I'll show them a medal. (g)
AdamPepper: I see that Don D'Auria is scheduled to appear at Necon, I don't want to bug the guy, I'm sure a lot of people want to pitch to him and stuff. I just want to shake his hand so he can put a face to my proposal
Yvonne: Adam, you can talk to ANYONE at Necon. That's how it is -- you say you've never been?
JanCyberC: Yvonne...do you find that conventions are good places to make contacts with publishers, etc.?
Garrett: Don's a nice guy. Very approachable.
Yvonne: Yes, but you have to get over that fear of approaching them (Adam, you hear that? (g))
AdamPepper: nope, never been to any cons I'm afraid
Yvonne: People are getting away. I'm going to have to go the Roach Motel route for the next chat, I think.
Garrett: Shameless plug, Adam: I have an interview with Don in the new issue of Cemetery Dance.
Yvonne: Anyway, Adam, just go up to Don and say hi.
AdamPepper: thanks
Yvonne: Or sit yourself down at the same table with him in the cafeteria during one of the meals, then introduce yourself. Or go up to him and chat at one of the endless parties. The possibilities abound.
AdamPepper: that's the way to go, hopefully he'll have a drink or two in him
Yvonne: By the way, Adam, you're bringing your wife, right?
JanCyberC: right after panels can be touch and go, though, depending on the person's schedule.
AdamPepper: yes
Garrett: Necon's much more relaxed.
Yvonne: There's only one track at Necon, and all the panels are in the same place. It's relaxed. Well, Adam. You should have told us her name. We didn't know so I went with Bob Booth's suggestion when I added her to the Campers list on the web site. hee hee
Garrett: Once you've met a few horror authors you won't be afraid to approach others. Scary writers are the nicest people.
AdamPepper: Tara. Is that what the Belle Pepper was?
Yvonne: Hee hee.
JanCyberC: LOLOLOLOL.
Yvonne: Fine. I'll change it to Tara Belle Pepper.
JanCyberC: LOLOLOLOLOLOL.
AdamPepper: she doesn't know any martial arts but she might take you on!!
Yvonne: LOL! You're going to love Necon. Just don't be too shy -- wander around at the parties and get to know people.
JanCyberC: About how many folks attend Necon?
Garrett: 200 is the limit. It's filled this year.
Yvonne: Maximum attendance is 200. We hit the max this year because of the 20th anniversary.
JanCyberC: Ah. Interesting that you put a limit on it.
Yvonne: It keeps it small, keeps everyone, fan and writer alike, approachable. It's like summer camp, shared townhouse dorms. Room and board are included in the registration price.
JanCyberC: That's good. Also cuts down on the last minute goths-up-to-no-good.
Yvonne: Meals in the cafeteria at set hours during the day.
Garrett: Indeed.
Yvonne: One track panels, an excellent dealers' room and art show.
Garrett: And better parties!
Yvonne: Everyone pitches in and brings stuff to the parties. And they last far far into the night.
Garrett: Ask Dallas Mayr where the real parties are!
Yvonne: In his head. ha ha
JanCyberC: Sounds to me like this is an excellent *first* convention for Adam.
Yvonne: It's an excellent con, period.
Garrett: It might ruin the rest for him.
Yvonne: If I could only go to one per year, I would give up WHC and WFC and go to Necon.
AdamPepper: I can drink and function on no sleep, so I should fit right in
Yvonne: Excellent!
Garrett: Same here, Yvonne.
Yvonne: I'm really looking forward to it. I've made some of the best friends I have there. Okay, anyone have any more questions?
AdamPepper: I noticed a few editors on the list, how 'bout agents, are any attending?
Yvonne: Not as far as I know, but then I'm not really familiar with who's who in the industry.
JanCyberC: Folks...shall we call it a night and agree to meet here next Friday to cheer Yvonne on again?
AdamPepper: bye, thanks again. I'll try to remember to stop in next week.
Yvonne: Thanks. :) Okay, see you later! Thanks for having me.
JanCyberC: Thank YOU
Yvonne: Bye.

The 1999 Q&A

Cybling Yvonne! * JanCyberC applauds
Beth Hey, Von!
canaan YEAH !!!!!!!!!!!! TRUMPETS !!!!!!!
Ara Applauding
gak WOo hoo
Vanessa666 Hi, Von
Beth Wheeeeeeeee!
Yvonne Navarro Hello. Sorry I'm late -- little trouble connecting.
canaan *bowing and scraping for Queen Navarro*
Yvonne Navarro Hi everyone.
Beth Understood mega!
Cybling 8^D
gak Always gotta make an entrance
di Welcome
Yvonne Navarro [g]
Yvonne Navarro Okay, who wants to know what. Okay, I'm one of those writer types. I write horror, sci fi and other stuff. Ok? And I live in Illinois. How's that?
Beth K...
canaan LOL.... i think we've got that... i have a pile of your books next to my mouse.... waiting for the NEXT one !
Cybling Okay...folks...I have something from the board for Yvonne
Yvonne Navarro The bored?
Cybling Then I'll open it up to you all.... David Kembrey writes... Hi YYvonne, just thought I would say a Hello and wish you all the best for Xmas and the New Year (and in case you dont remember I'm the person who emailed you about the rifle in Final Imapct) btw havent spotted any of your books down here in Aust. Looks like I will have to buy them through Amazon. cya
Yvonne Navarro What's cya?
Cybling See you in cyberspeek.
Cybling Yvonne...is Amazon the best place to get your books?
Yvonne Navarro Ah. Boy, I'm out of it. Forgive me, I have the cold from Hell. By now, Amazon is probably the only place you can get Red Shadows because it's been out for awhile.
Beth How difficult was it to write your first Buffy book? Did you find it hard to get into the characters' personalities? The fans are really RABID about writing characters the way they see 'em and want 'em seen..
gak You can sometimes find Red in the bookstores though, thats where I got it
Yvonne Navarro Cool. At least it's still out there. Buffy isn't too hard for me to get into the personalities. I need to spend more time around teenagers though -- to get used to the way they "talk". I kind of find the media world too limiting.
canaan Yvonne... i had the horrid experience of dealing with an agent of ill repute (eventually dealt with by the FBI) what tips, hints can you give to help me avoid that in the future?
Yvonne Navarro About the agent thing -- I'm not really sure. I've only had one agent since I started, and somehow I got lucky and got someone really reputable.
di I can ship you the bunch that hangs around here for free, Ms Navarro
Yvonne Navarro Maybe it's possible to email around and ask about the person?
gak So when is there gonna be a new Red Shadows, Final Impact book, you have a great world set up there, you gotta explore it more!
Yvonne Navarro Well, thank you. Unfortunately at this point, a third book in the unofficial "series" may be a long time coming.
Garrett Tell us about your upcoming suspense novel from Bantam-- the one you've wanted to write for so long.
Dwayne Yvonne!! How are you this evening???
Yvonne Navarro Okay. It's coming out in June and is called "That's Not My Name". The story centers around a man who kidnaps a woman in a grocery store parking lot because he believes she's his wife. Because of her past, she starts to question whether or not he's correct.
canaan sounds cool
Dwayne June??? good. Er, anything else coming out before then?? i can't rememeber your last email. Sonds like a good novel for good reading!!!
BG1818 Did you do any research for this novel?
Yvonne Navarro Yes, I did. I talked to a Chicago detective about police procedure, etc., talked extensively with a friend of mine who's a psychologist about whether or not the plot was plausible.
canaan And DEAD TIMES is sold? coming soon?
Yvonne Navarro Yes, DeadTimes is finally sold. It will be published by
DarkTales Publishing (http://www.darktales.com).
canaan LOL Yvonne or Evon
BG1818 Do you always research with psycologist to see if the plots are plausible?
Yvonne Navarro Basically I'll research anything that needs it.
Dwayne SayYvonne, Are you still going to do a follow up book on Afterage?
Yvonne Navarro I actually do have a plotline kind of made out for AfterAge, so maybe someday.
Dwayne WHOO-HOO!!!! I can't wait!!! Keep me informed!!
BG1818 Have you used any of your personnal experiences in your work?
Yvonne Navarro As for personal experience (it's a darned good thing I type fast!) -- Yes, I do, but they end up all mixed up with fact and fantasy. [g]
Ras How long (professionally) have you been writing?
Yvonne Navarro Professionally? As in full time? Since May. But I started dabbling in writing fiction in 1982.
canaan You talked about having difficulties getting family to allow you to work.... do you have a 'cell' to hide in? some sort of code to give you the privacy you need?
Yvonne Navarro I wasn't very disciplined.
Ras Disciplined?! Way cool!
Garrett Is Dead Times a collection, perhaps?
Yvonne Navarro Garrett, DeadTimes is a novel.
Beth Von, will you be attending Necon20 in Rhode Island...the best of the cons around...next July? [G]
BG1818 I remember you from World Fantasies dating back to 87.
Yvonne Navarro You bet I'll be a Necon. I've got a standing spot there and they'll never get rid of me.
Beth Yay!
canaan are you coming to Northern Ohio soon?
Yvonne Navarro Yep. Old pal.
Dwayne Oh another question, is there going to be another novel in the final impact storyline??? BTW Red shadows was EXCELLENT!!! But i told you that already....
Yvonne Navarro Where was I? Agh.
Dwayne Deadtimes a novel??? when did this novel come out?
Yvonne Navarro Wait !!!! I have a cold -- I have to focus and this writing is itty bitty! [g]
Yvonne Navarro Okay, uh... Northern Ohio. As in Cleveland?
Beth Take your time Von..we'll wait!
canaan YES CLEVE
Yvonne Navarro Well, since I have a new friend ::ahem:: in Cleveland I'd certainly like to.
Vanessa666 hehe
Beth I've HEARD about that....!! [G]
canaan cool, girlfriend and I will take you to a terrific restaurant !
Yvonne Navarro Oh, let's see. Red Shadows/Final Impact -- we'll have to see about another novel. I'm not sure.
Yvonne Navarro DeadTimes is a novel, but it will come out in February from DarkTales Publications. (I'm catching up here!)
BG1818 Will you be at World Horror this year?
Yvonne Navarro Yes I will be at World Horror.
BG1818 Good I'll be there too.
gak Urge everyone to go to WHC in Denver, gonna be a great party
Garrett Agree with GAK. WHC great party!
Ras Is Afterage (or *does*) Afterage involve Alternate History?
Yvonne Navarro Let's see... AfterAge...Yes. I would call that alternate history. It's a world where the vampires have "won" and there are only a few human survivors.
Ras Awsome ...
gak Track AfterAge down Ras, great novel
Beth Yes, indeed!
Ras I've been in Limbo for too long ;)
Dwayne Say you should visit up here in toronto!!! I could show all the sights and sounds of this city!!! you'd loveit!
Vanessa666 yes, von has to come to toronto!
Beth Von, what new projects are you considering now?
canaan Yvonne... i've noted that women writers, regardless of area of expertise, sci fi/ dark fiction... write a lot more about the people... and end up with a 'warmer' book... comment?
Yvonne Navarro Canaan, I don't know about that. I've read some excellent fiction -- including "warm" characters -- by male writers.
BG1818 I agree. I think women pay more attention to feelings and emotion as well. I agree with you that there are some male writers who are very sensitive but women rule.
Dwayne So Yvonne, about the Deadtimes novel, what is it about, and any simularity to Deadrush?
Yvonne Navarro Okay, let's deal with the DeadTimes question. DeadTimes isn't anything like deadrush. DeadTimes is an odd little novel, about a woman who sells her soul to Satan for the chance to live more lives. The novel is basically a horror "time jumper".
Ras I hate to cut my visit short :( Nice to meet you, Yvonne ... ::::Going to get involved with your AFTERAGE!::::
gak But no offense to the ladies in the room, but Von is one of the few women writers I can read cause she doesnt get hung up on the emotional stuff so much it interferes with the story
Yvonne Navarro Well, thank you Gak. :)
Dwayne OIC...Ok sounds intresting.
gak anytime gorgeous
Cybling Yvonne...what would you say is the difference between the vampires in your original novels and say the vampires in the new Buffy book?
Yvonne Navarro :) Hmmm....More history, maybe. Some of the Buffy vampires have history but they all seem to serve some kind of hidden higher power or something or want the world to end. Basically mine just wanted to make sure they had dinner next week. ha ha
BG1818 Buffy would be characters that were already established when you got them.
Dwayne I think the vamps in Buffy look a little too weird and clequed.....
canaan ROTFLMAO
Garrett Also, your own vampires are scarier!
Beth Indeed, Von!
canaan R Heinlein aside, women writers, Moon, Navarro, Nye Mccaffrey, are more 'human' than Clancy, King or Barker... which is harder for you, novels or shorts?
Yvonne Navarro I don't think I can pick one or the other. Novels obviously take longer but I've had some short stories be sonofaguns to write.
dreamer Do teenagers really talk like "Buffy" or Do the characters on "Buffy" talk like real teenagers..who influences who? or is it whom??? I find the addition of "y" to words interesting on the TVshow
BG1818 Good question. Teens have there own langauge but how much comes from TV???
Yvonne Navarro Re: Teenagers. I'm not sure. I need someone with experience to answer that!
Yvonne Navarro Okay, I'm caught up. :)
canaan So Yvonne, have you given much thought to a horror novel about Georgia? *EG*
Yvonne Navarro [g] Actually, Harmony, Alabama (I think it's Alabama, anyway) keeps popping up.
BG1818 Why Harmony?
gak good name, bet its not Harmonious at all, eh?
Dwayne Are you going to email those of us on your list when Deadtimes novel comes out??
Yvonne Navarro I'll email everyone who gives me, intentionally or not intentionally, their email address. [EG]
canaan on the topic of emails... you seem to be rather shy.... we LIKE hearing from you.. !!!
Dwayne I agee with cannan...Still its nice that you answers our emails!!! We really aprecate it Yvonne!
Beth What projects are you planning in the near future?
Yvonne Navarro Upcoming projects: Working on Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Paleo right now. (And no, Harmony is anything but.)
Garrett Some writer's use psuedonyms when doing media tie-ins. Why not you?
Yvonne Navarro I don't know. I just never wanted to.
canaan so you've never used a psudo??? *please say no*
Yvonne Navarro No, I've never used a pseudonym.
canaan *whew*.... i HATE when writers do that.... makes it hard to collect
gak Mondo Zombie...yeah right, maybe you cna get your legions to torment Obsidian Yvonne
Yvonne Navarro But I reserve the right to do so someday if I want to.
Garrett Good! Be proud of what you do!
Yvonne Navarro I am. Although I also understand why some writers use pseudonyms, and the reasons aren't always obvious.
canaan please explain the not so obvious reasons...\
Yvonne Navarro Well, first.... Sometimes they do it because they're prolific enough to where publishers feel the writer is rather "flooding" the market. And sometimes, if paperback sales haven't been so hot, a writer inadvertently gets a "history" that doesn't really reflect how well the books really sell. Since publishers only look at computer numbers, the only way to sometimes shake that history is to start publishing under a different name.
BG1818 Are you considering using Harmony Alabama as a name for a novel or going there?
Yvonne Navarro Harmony is the name of a town I made up and from which I've "drawn" characters in different novels. That's Not My Name has a female cop who was raised there.
BG1818 OH! Sorry.
Beth Von, which lip sync performance do you consider the highlight of your musical career...the celtic Mouth Music or Chuck-E's in Love? [G]
Yvonne Navarro Celtic. [g] I still remember the words, believe it or not.
Beth Yay!
BG1818 Hummm??? Is Beth a writer too?
Beth Ummm....uh....
Yvonne Navarro (Yes, she is.)
BG1818 Do you attend Necon?
Garrett She OWNS Necon!
Vanessa666 Von is the Necon Queen.
Beth She does! Just ask any Neconer who the Queen of Necon is!
Dwayne Er, whats NECON?
BG1818 Wait a minute I didn't think Necon was owned by anyone.
Beth New England Writers' Conference...
gak Ohhhhhhh Jeez whats Necon, here we go....
Dwayne Oh...........
Yvonne Navarro http://www.para-net.com/~necon
Yvonne Navarro [g]
Garrett Best con going for pure fun.
Beth Amen!
BG1818 Wait you know what World Horror is but you don't know what Necon is?
Dwayne Gak: oops!!! my bad!!
gak Necon is some kind of bizarre cult founded by pod people from some Lovecraftian space craft
Yvonne Navarro Poor gak. He just can't get away from it.
Beth Hey, you can't know until you know!
gak Look what you started Dwanye
Cybling Yvonne...missed seeing you at WindyCon this year...though it was mentioned earlier that you did 3 cons this year...which were they and what's the next convention on your schedule.
Yvonne Navarro Okay, let's see...I always do World Fantasy, World Horror and (sorry, Gak) Necon. I do generally do Capricon and WindyCon but they interfered with my martial arts training this year. And Jan -- I can't really complain about missing WindyCon since that's how I ended up meeting my new friend from Ohio. [g]
canaan Yvonne, so with the challenges of the internet publishing, and the 'regular' publishers giving a novel all of 15 minutes to become a success, how do you see authors surviving/succeeding, if they're not a KING or Clancy?
Yvonne Navarro Canaan, that's a difficult question. Maybe promo on their own.
canaan Apparently, a successful new writer has to commit a crime before his 'novel' can come out
Beth What kind of martial arts, Von?
BG1818 Wow you are into the Martial Arts??? I didn't know that.
gak Ive been practicing my kick Von
Dwayne Oh yeah!! hows the marshal arts coming along??? what belt are you now?
Yvonne Navarro In your dreams, Gak. C'mon and try it. [eg]
gak no really!
Vanessa666 haha
Yvonne Navarro Gold belt, two stripes.
gak you didnt think I was paying attention did you?
Yvonne Navarro Would have gotten my third stripe this weekend if I hadn't been too ill to attend an 8 hour training seminar.
BG1818 What style of Martial Arts do you study?
Dwayne Gold?? What marshal art are you in???
Yvonne Navarro I study a blend of a whole bunch of different styles at the Degerberg Academy of Martial Arts. I met my friend at a live blade knife training seminar he taught. The style includes a mix of almost everything -- judo, karate, kickboxing, Kali, you name it, it's probably in there.
Dwayne So how far are you from a black?? or are you supased that??
Beth "live blade knife training..." oye, sounds, like
dreamer as opposed to a dead blade ...???
Beth dangerous!
canaan Yvonne, is your interest in martial arts a defense for all the cons you attend? *EG*
BG1818 Wow! That's interesting. Do you consider that the displine of the martial arts helps you in your writing?
Yvonne Navarro [g]
FeoAmante Hey Yvonne! glad I'm not too late!
Yvonne Navarro An entire rainbow away from black, still.
Yvonne Navarro Beth, not really. I can't find a connection between the two.
canaan *noogies* to Yvonne
Yvonne Navarro ::whap::
Beth Yeah...
gak more more more!!!
canaan COOL!!!!! maybe i can frame the welt ! *S*
Dwayne Oh, I take classes too!! I just got my red belt from tae-kwon do, and I'm just starting to take akido classes!!! perhaps we should spar sometime to test each other's skills!!! heh-heh.
Yvonne Navarro Sure. Just give me three more years of training before I expose my nose and dental work to someone else. ha ha
canaan we came up with some interesting options..... Misery
Dwayne Kwel!! it a a match!!! be warned!!! i might have a age and weight advantage on you!!
Yvonne Navarro Oh great. Can I use a stand in?
Dwayne No!!! then it wouldn't be a true match!!! Besides you hev to learn how to take on people larger than you...
canaan we were talking earlier about the unfortunatly poor work habits SOME authors have.... not staying at the puter 24/7 to feed us addicts
Yvonne Navarro Uh oh. [g]
BG1818 I think of it more as the poor work habits of the publishers than the writers.
Cybling Yvonne...you mentioned you're writing some shorter than novel length works lately...anything we should look for in the near future and in what magazine?
Yvonne Navarro Jan, you mean short stories?
Cybling Yes ma'am
Yvonne Navarro Oh boy, my brain is not working very well right now, I'm afraid. I do have a story coming out in Brian Hopkins's EXTREMES.
Cybling Is that an anthology, Yvonne?
Yvonne Navarro I can't recall what else, but it's on the bibliography on my web site.
Beth Von, other than martial arts, how do you relax in your spare time?
Yvonne Navarro WHAT spare time???
canaan LOL
Dwayne heh-jheh
canaan what do you think of self publishing???? is it a REALISTIC way for a new author to get started?
Yvonne Navarro I just don't know about self-publishing. There's so much more to the business, to actually being able to make a living at it, than just putting the words out there.
FeoAmante Hey Yvonne, I have a few movie questions if you are in the mood. Species and Species II. If you were told tomorrow, Hey, write any kind of Species story you want and we'll make a movie of it, what would you do different?
Yvonne Navarro Hmmm. Species. The shame of it was that the script for Species II wasn't half bad -- the producer absolutely destroyed it by taking all the characterization out. It would have been nice just to see it put back in.
canaan species.... they chose the female sex cuz it was more docile, right? *Smirk*
Yvonne Navarro There were actually reasons why the characters in that movie did things -- unfortunately it just seemed like a bloodbath.
Beth characters, schmaracters, they only want ACTION!
Yvonne Navarro And in the script, the character made fun of that line.
canaan yup....
Dwayne Yeah those damn hollywood producers!!!
FeoAmante Okay then, how about this. If you were offered the chance to write any movie you want, which of your stories would you want to see on screen?
Yvonne Navarro AfterAge. Ain't nothing like a good old fashioned vampire movie. [eg]
canaan i think the following line was "you obviously dont get out much"
FeoAmante and those damn book publishers!
Yvonne Navarro Just ask Keifer Sutherland. [g]
FeoAmante damn magazine editors!
BG1818 LOL
Garrett Hopefull 6th Sense showed 'em. More characterization than special effects. Refreshing.
FeoAmante damn rooskies!
canaan damn lawyers
Yvonne Navarro Now now kids.
Beth wheeee!
Yvonne Navarro Damned cold.
Cybling Yvonne...just tell me who needs to be thwapped and when.
Yvonne Navarro Oh, I'm sorry. I guess I'm attacking the viruses now.
BG1818 Is it cold up there ?
canaan LOL (((((((hugs))))))))) *handing a hot toddy to Yvonne*
Yvonne Navarro [g]
Dwayne say,Yvonne did you ever see a move called Dark City??? If not i HIGHLY recomend it!!!!
Yvonne Navarro Agh -- gonna take more than a toddy. And yes, I did see Dark City.
BG1818 I liked Dark City.
Beth Didn't see it...
FeoAmante See CEMETARY MAN
FeoAmante You WON'T regret it
Yvonne Navarro And I am not leaving. So there. hee hee
BG1818 When my work gets slow I see movies.
FeoAmante Rupert's BEST!
Yvonne Navarro I'll see anything with Russell Crowe in it.
BG1818 The guy in the INSider?
Yvonne Navarro Oh yes, that's my Russell. :)
FeoAmante Hey! Yvonne deserves a life TOO, ya know! :-)
Dwayne Really?? what did you think of it?? I thought is was one of the most underrated movies ever!!! BETH!! Go rent it right now!!!
Beth Will do!!!
BG1818 I still haven't seen that Insider movie. I've heard it's good but not yet.
canaan russell??? that's me !!! really !!!
Cybling Folks...folks..folks...sending her to movies means she's not duct-taped to the computer.
canaan no, dont see movies... sit at puter and write write write.... *tapping foot*
Yvonne Navarro Okay.
Beth Do you find working on more than one book at once distracting?
Yvonne Navarro Actually, I can't seem to really work on more than one at a time. What happens is I generally put the bigger project aside and finish the shorter one first.[g] I should learn, though. Other people do.
Beth How many hours a day do you write?
Yvonne Navarro Not enough, lately. Agh.
BG1818 Canaan is that a crush I hear?
canaan count on it beth
Yvonne Navarro :) ::blush::
FeoAmante Anybody who wants to get a crush on Yvonne, just see the new pic of her at her website!
Dwayne Oh yeah!! KWEL pic on your site Yvonne!
canaan Yvonne, you already said you'd visit us and let us buy you dinn
FeoAmante In the immortal words of Inspector gadget: WOWSERS!
Dwayne BTW how are you gonna spend chrismas?? if at all??
Yvonne Navarro Christmas... probably just stick around here. Whee. [g]
Cybling Yvonne...I think you may have answered it earlier...but *which* convention are you next planning to attend?
Yvonne Navarro Next one is going to be at World Horror, probably.
Cybling Is that before or after ChiCon?
Garrett See ya there! Hope I'm off the crutches by then.
Yvonne Navarro Jan, hold on -- let me check.
Yvonne Navarro World Horror is before ChiCon.
FeoAmante don't be so shy around me at the con this time, Yvonne! I'm boisterous but friendly!
Yvonne Navarro WHC is in May, ChiCon is in August.
BG1818 Yvonne do you know Joe Lansdale he's into the Martial Arts too.
Beth Is that Chili con?
Yvonne Navarro I owe Joe Lansdale my career, Beth. I worship the ground he walks on.
BG1818 Well the next photo book I'm working on is with Joe writing and I'm photoing the Grand Masters of the Martial Arts.
Yvonne Navarro Give him a kiss on the cheek for me. :)
Dwayne Yvonne What about New years??? DO YOU FEAR THE NEW MILLENIEN???? THE APOCOLYSPE??Y2K?? etc????
canaan on a personal note, what kinda foods do you like??
Yvonne Navarro Nah, I can protect myself.
Dwayne Damn typos!!
Yvonne Navarro Mexican is my favorite, pasta, some spicy stuff. Edy's Dreamery Hot Chili Chili Ice Cream.
Dwayne thats good
Beth good question, foods. Tell 'em about Ne-condiments!
Vanessa666 I still want to try that Ice Cream!
Yvonne Navarro Actually, the food at Necon has gotten decent and so we don't need Necondiments anymore.
canaan so how goes the plan to move to AZ?
Beth LOL
FeoAmante If you are considering Tucson, AVOID IT!
Vanessa666 bring some of that Ice Cream to WHC!!!!
Yvonne Navarro I don't know. I've kind of got Cleveland in my head. What's the matter with Tuscon? I heard it was nice.
FeoAmante Trust me, that place is my ex-home town!
Garrett But it's a DRY heat.
BG1818 Cleveland is a nice city.
Yvonne Navarro Heat and dry is a good thing.
canaan cool... we can adopt you if you come to cleveland.... how do you feel about cockatiels??? *S*
Dwayne Yvonne have you ever tried jerk chicken??? its a trditional West indian(Jamacian) dish. VERY Spicy and VERY HOT!!!
FeoAmante You'll discover allergies you never knew you HAD!
Cybling Does a certain knife wielding martial artist live in Cleveland?
canaan you may have to share a cage for a bit
FeoAmante Heat and dry makes 20 year old girls turn into lizards. That climate dries your skin like anything, and moisturizers can't keep pace!
Beth I love the way chats evolve to the basics!!! [G]
Yvonne Navarro I haven't tried jerk chicken but I want to. And yes, a certain knife-wielding martial artist lives in Cleveland. [g]
Cybling [g]
Yvonne Navarro You just have to take care of your skin, Feo.
Garrett Sure you don't mean DEvolve, Beth? [g]
canaan hmmmm, do i have competition with the knife guy? i've got a fork
Yvonne Navarro (This being said from weeks and weeks in Phoenix.)
Yvonne Navarro LOL!
BG1818 I don't think of Cleveland as being very far from Chicago.
Yvonne Navarro And just how many years of experience do you have with that fork?
FeoAmante After living in the desert for 11 years, IKNOW how to take care of my skin, Trust me on this one! :-)
Beth Depends, I LIKE this converstation!
Dwayne Wel you should come up here to toronto, so i can make you some....BE WARNED!!! it might be tooooo hot for even your palate!!!!
Beth Beauty tip time!
Yvonne Navarro Well, I don't really want to permanently fry my taste buds.
Garrett Bad joke. Couldn't help myself.
canaan i've not stabbed myself too many times with it over the last 40 some years... although i HAVE been relagated to remedial spoon from time to time
Beth HAHAHA
Yvonne Navarro [g]
Beth [G]
Garrett LOL!
BG1818 Didn't I see that character on Mystery Men?
Dwayne Yvonne, Don't worry you won't!! I'll make it mild if its too much for you...
Cybling OK, we've had Yvonne duct-taped to the hot seat for about 45 minutes now...do we have any writing/novel/story questions we've not asked yet?
Yvonne Navarro What, I can't talk about my martial artist??!
FeoAmante HA! yeah! The superhero wouldn't use knives because somebody could get hurt!
Beth Where do you hope to see yourself ten years from now?
Yvonne Navarro Cleveland? Just kidding. Anyway, I'd like to be making a little better living at writing than I am now, and also writing solo novels rather than media tie ins. There's nothing wrong with them, but I find them too limiting.
Cybling Sure you can Yvonne... just want to make sure everyone asks their burning questions.
Yvonne Navarro ::ahem::
canaan well, we KNOW Yvonne wont read our stuff (cuz she's busily writing her own stuff) but she has yet to give us her agent's name, or at least a very good way to get an agent
Beth A good way to get a GOOD agent...
FeoAmante Hey canaan, I know a good way to get Yvonne to read your stuff!
FeoAmante Get it published!
canaan LOL FEO
Cybling How *did* you find your agent, Yvonne?
Yvonne Navarro My agent's name is Howard Morhaim, but he's never read stuff based on my recommendation. I think his list is full or something.
BG1818 I didn't know you were represented by Howard.
Yvonne Navarro Years ago, when his list wasn't so full (7 years ago??) he read AfterAge because Joe Lansdale asked him to. Which is why I worship Joe.
BG1818 Where you at his tuxedo dinners?
Cybling Ah...thus the adoration of Lansdale.
Garrett Do you know if Joe is doing any cons this year?
Beth Joe's the best
Yvonne Navarro Yep.
BG1818 Wait now I remember you being there at the one in Monterey.
BG1818 He is the toast masser at World Fantasy in Texas.
Yvonne Navarro I'm pretty sure Joe's going to be at WFC in Austin, isn't it?
Garrett Thanks. Ever get Joe to Necon, you think?
BG1818 He's the Toast Master I spoke to him today and he will be there.
Dwayne okYvonne if your gonign to be that good in your varoius marshal arts i supose next on your agenda is enter the World Womens Grapple tournement in Japan to kick some seroius ARSE and become the greatest female marshal artist in the world!?!
Yvonne Navarro I'm not much on grappling except with certain people. ::cough::
Cybling LOLOL
BG1818 He doesn't know what he'll do but he is planning on it.
Beth yeehah
Vanessa666 hehe
Vanessa666 wasn't joe at necon once?
BG1818 Joe has been a quest of honor at Necon.
FeoAmante Okay, here is a question, Yvonne. Many authors expand a short story into a later novel. Are there any short stories of yours that you would like to write into novel length?
Yvonne Navarro None that I can think of, Feo. Although AfterAge started out as a 900 word short short story.
Dwayne Oh?? any prticular people you wat to grapple??
Garrett Cool. He's one of the few of my favorites I haven't met yet.
Yvonne Navarro Joe hasn't been to Necon in awhile.
BG1818 Sounds like she maybe grappling with this fellow in Cleveland.
Yvonne Navarro Grappling? I'm thinking of someone in Cleveland.
Yvonne Navarro See? :)
Garrett Necondiments scare him off? Not enough Mojo in the chili?
canaan *blushing*
Yvonne Navarro Nothing scares Joe. He's my hero.
canaan Yvonne... i hardly knew ye *S*
Dwayne Oh REALLY Yvonne??? my,my MY!!!!
BG1818 Joe just got back from a trip to Transylvannia.
Yvonne Navarro Beth, my Cleveland friend is coming to visit this weekend.
Beth great!!!!
BG1818 Cool! Does he read?
canaan LOL
Yvonne Navarro LOL!
Beth or just play with....knives...?
Yvonne Navarro Yes, he reads. :)
Yvonne Navarro And plays with knives. And swords. Etc.
BG1818 Sorry I had to ask.
canaan at least he's not from PARMA
Yvonne Navarro Parma?
FeoAmante We're goin' BOWLIN'!
canaan suburb of Cleveland, butt of a LOT of polish jokes *S*
canaan ask him about it
Yvonne Navarro Okay. He's from Strongsville. Appropriate, really.
canaan cool... just down the street from us... sort of
BG1818 Cute.
Yvonne Navarro ha ha
Beth cool....just 800 miles from us...!
canaan LOL beth
canaan Yvonne, have you had any of your work sold into different languages?
canaan i would think the Hungarians would love the vampires *S*
Cybling Different languages...good question.
Yvonne Navarro Well, some of it has been translated into different languages, but mostly the novelizations. I've got a German publisher looking at Final Impact right now. I did have one story translated into German, then translated it back. It was hysterical.
Garrett Good luck with the Germans!
canaan LOL.... jeez dwayne, priorities
Dwayne Cannan!!! heh-heh....
canaan LOL.... Yvonne... how did the re re translation turn out?
Yvonne Navarro Oh, it was toooo funny.
canaan nothing to read from our favorite writers? Hint HINT
Yvonne Navarro I always said I was going to read it out loud at a bookstore someday just as a comedy routine.
canaan ROTFLMAO
Yvonne Navarro ::whap::
Dwayne Yvonne, hey some of us are working and in school!!! we have very little time to sleep!!
Yvonne Navarro Sleep is a total waste of time.
canaan who got whapped? *ducking*
Beth Sleep is a wonderful activity...!
Goldeneyed okay
Beth I love sleep!
canaan "we dont need no stinkin sleep "
Beth Sleep good!
Beth WE need stinkin' sleep!
Yvonne Navarro Oh, I am just not going here. No, I ain't.
Beth ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
FeoAmante Especially us hyperactives!
Yvonne Navarro WAKE UP!!!
Dwayne BAH!!!! i say SLEEPin a plenty for me!!
canaan go ahead Yvonne, you're among fiends... *EG*
Cybling Yvonne...how does an author go about getting their stories optioned....
Beth What..!! Oh, okay! Hi,What's happening/
Garrett Huh? What. Oh, I was paying attention!
Cybling and have you had any nibbles yet on your original work?
Yvonne Navarro That's a wonderful question, Jan. And I wish I could answer it. If I could, I'd show you how personally. ha ha
canaan *blushing*
Cybling LOL
Yvonne Navarro Pay Attention Class: All Stories Available For Option.
Goldeneyed do you write original works or novelized stories of the tv shows
FeoAmante Yvonne, tell everybody here the one thing you say that writers should ALWAYS do!
Dwayne Yvonne i still say you should come up here to Toronto at least once...
canaan writers write
Yvonne Navarro I've written one novelization for Buffy and am working on an original novel for Buffy right now.
Yvonne Navarro READ YOUR WORK OUT LOUD!!!
FeoAmante it inspired me to make my own website.
Yvonne Navarro What did, Feo?
FeoAmante In another chat, you repeated this 3 times. it became my mantra: PROMOTE YOURSELF!
Cybling Ah yes...shameless self-promotion. Extrememly important today.
Yvonne Navarro Well, that too. It depends on what stage you're involved in. [g]
FeoAmante Folks there were talking about how shy they felt sending their work out.
Yvonne Navarro During the writing: read out loud. After the writing: promote.
Yvonne Navarro No no no! Don't be shy!
canaan it doesnt hurt to be on star trek, seems like EVERYONE from there has written a book now
Cybling Good questions...Yvonne...why do you suppose so many authors avoid promoting themselves...is there some set of rules about being overly humble you get when you publish?
Yvonne Navarro If you don't promote it, who will?
FeoAmante After you said that, I went tothe WHC were Brian Keene promptly nicknamed me The Hurricane
Yvonne Navarro You can promote without being obnoxious.
Yvonne Navarro Promoting isn't the same as... I dunno. Bragging or whatever.
FeoAmante OOP! Was I obnoxious???
Yvonne Navarro No, silly. ::smack:: Hey, I like that. ::smack:: again.
Garrett Unless you're Harlan Ellison. Then you can promote obnoxiously and get away with it!
canaan LOL
Cybling No...I doubt it...but I'm assuming that authors have been thwacked from time to time on the newsgroups.
FeoAmante Smacked by Yvonne! I'll never washthe place where she smacked me again! [sigh!]
Beth true, Garrett!
canaan and made to go on the newspapers too
Dwayne Yvonne be sure to email me when Deadtimes is out....AND KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!
Yvonne Navarro Well, from the newsgroups it seems people get thwacked just for breathing. I don't generally go out there.
canaan *ducking*
Cybling Dwayne...you can pre-order DEADTIMES via Amazon
Dwayne Thanks jan!! Great to come here!!
Dwayne Bye Beth!! dont forget to check out Dark City!!
Yvonne Navarro Okay, anyone else have more questions?
Beth Will do!!
Cybling Folks...we've had Yvonne on the hot seat for over an hour now. Last questions and let's let her nurse her cold.
canaan YVONNE.... thank you VERY much for the chance to chat with you... more importantly,, for the many hours of entertaining reading.... i look forward to our dinner in cleveland, and to hearing from your emails... many thanx... rest easy
Garrett How can a reviewer get on your list for review proofs?
Dwayne DOGE THIS!!!
FeoAmante Here is one. A few authors have published or put their names to magazines in their genre. Have you ever considered that, seriously?
Garrett How can a reviewer get on your list for review proofs?
Yvonne Navarro Okay, let's see... Reviewers -- I don't know, Garrett. I'm just midlist -- it's become increasingly difficult for me to get Bantam to send out review copies of anything, unfortunately.
Garrett Too bad. Haven't had the pleasure of reviewing you yet.
Yvonne Navarro You might try just going straight to the publisher. Bantam didn't even send Locus a copy of Red Shadows and I didn't know it until 8 months later.
Cybling Good idea Yvonne.
FeoAmante Here is one. A few authors have published or put their names to magazines in their genre. Have you ever considered that, seriously?
Yvonne Navarro Feo, what do you mean by "put their names to magazines"?
FeoAmante You know, Isaac Asimov's SF magazine. Marion Zimmer Bradley's Fantasy
Yvonne Navarro But didn't he actually edit that, too?
FeoAmante Sometimes he did and sometimes he didn't.
Yvonne Navarro I barely have time to breathe -- I sure don't have time to edit a magazine or put one out properly.
FeoAmante George Scithers did a lot of the editing while Asimov was alive
Yvonne Navarro There are so many things I want to do that I can't imagine doing that besides.
Cybling Understandable Yvonne, and we want to read more of your original work.
Garrett Thanks for sharing Yvonne!
Cybling Okay...let's give Yvonne a big hug...
Garrett Say, Von, any books you're recommending lately?
FeoAmante Isay 2 quarts because I've known MANY people to gothrough 1 and a half quarts before their mouth cools off
Yvonne Navarro Yeah, Lords of Light by Steven Spruill.
Garrett Gotta love Steve.
Yvonne Navarro I wish I had more time to read, but I'm still sooooo behind. I can't seem to catch up on anything.
Cybling Happens when you're writing full time and trying to have a life at the same time.
Garrett I've read 209 books this year and STILL can't catch up, so don't feel bad! * JanCyberC applauds and thanks Yvonne profusely.
Garrett Got a favorite author (besides Joe?)
Yvonne Navarro [g] Let's see... I'm partial to Rick McCammon, F. Paul Wilson, Steve Spruill, Brian Hodge, Beth Massie, Poppy. Older King stuff. Probably dozens of others my virus-clogged brain won't let me think of right now.
Garrett Good choices, all. BTW, I'm directed a new play by F. Paul and Matt C. next month.
Yvonne Navarro Cool.
Yvonne Navarro Gary Braunbeck writes wicked fiction, plus I also like Gary Brandner stuff.
Garrett It's called SYZYGY? Have you ever seen so many "y"s in a word in your life? [g]
Yvonne Navarro :)
Cybling Okay folks...let's let Yvonne crawl off to bed now.
FeoAmante Bye Yvonne! This was great!
Garrett Those are two great Garys, to be certain. I admire your taste.
Vanessa666 night Von!
Yvonne Navarro Thanks, everyone, for coming and talking to me. Let's do it again sometime. :)
FeoAmante Don't forget to re-send that e-mail I missed please!
Garrett Thanks, Yvonne! Get better soon! And don't burn any holes in your stomach!
Cybling You can bet on it Yvonne.
Yvonne Navarro Okay. Thanks, and good night!
FeoAmante Good night!

The 1998 Q&A

JanCyberC Afternoon Yvonne...have a seat and get comfortable.
Yvonne Thanks.
TechCyberC Good to see you Yvonne!
Yvonne You, too.
JanCyberC We're really looking forward to talking with you today about Horror and your lastest books.
Yvonne I'm ready -- fire away!
JanCyberC Yvonne...could you start us off by telling us what you're working on right now?
Yvonne This morning I finished an outline for a psychological thriller called "That's Not My Name." I plan on sending it out Monday, then holding my breath until my agent and my editor respond.
JanCyberC That's great! Novel, novella?
Yvonne Full sized novel. The outline is about 20 pages long, and about 140 pages of the novel is already written. I actually started this novel -- ready for this? -- in 1990.
TechCyberC Cool so you don't write your works till it's sold?
Yvonne That's the way it's sort of turned out, although I never really thought about it. I guess it is true, though, since the idea for this one was nixxed (nixed?) in 1992 (or postponed) by my agent.
JanCyberC Have you always begun with submitting an outline, or did you submit completed manuscripts originally?
JanCyberC Welcome Corwin75.
corwin75 Hello all
Yvonne I've been all over the road. AfterAge was my first novel and was sent to agents with a synopsis and sample chapters, but of course it was finished before being sent to a publisher. (Hi Corwin!) deadrush was outlined fully, and Final Impact was SUPPOSED to be... but I couldn't get the story straight enough to give them an outline so they ended up with the full novel instead. I think Final Impact taught me that I feel much more secure having an outline.
JanCyberC Corwin, we're having an open Q&A with Yvonne today...feel free to ask about her work and horror in general, just please wait until she's finished answering a question to pose one.
TechCyberC I'm wondering how one gets to write a book in the ALIEN series is it an invite only thing or do you submit something?
Yvonne I didn't submit anything. I think the project was one under the supervision of my editor. She and my agent talked about it, and I ended up with it.
BAHWOLF Boo!
Yvonne Oh boy.
TechCyberC (Great read BTW)
JanCyberC Welcome BAHWOLF!
Yvonne Thank you.
BAHWOLF Greetings, Von.
Yvonne Hi, to both BAH and dreamer.
BAHWOLF Hi, Tech, jan, Dreamer, Corwin.
JanCyberC Welcome Dreamer!
dreamer Hi Yvonne, BAH
TechCyberC Hi Corwin, BAH, and Dreamer!
dreamer High Tech
BAHWOLF So, what'd I miss? Anyone ask Von if she has any more sexy photos like the one on her web page?
JanCyberC So, Yvonne, the Alien book was a project that was proposed to you by your agent and editor? Interesting.
Yvonne The winning Lottery numbers.
JanCyberC ACTION thwapps BAHWOLF with a gold-tassled, Sears Tower souvenir pillow
TechCyberC ROFL
BAHWOLF ACTION thinks he's off to a good start now...
Yvonne Aliens was the first time I'd dealt with turning a comic book series into a book. It was harder than novelizing a movie script.
TechCyberC On the same thread how did you come up with the music side of that? Was a really surprising interesting twist.
Yvonne The music was part of Chet Williamson's story. I really got into it, thanks to lessons in the best classical dark music from Jeffrey Osier, who made all kinds of wonderful recommendations on what to listen to while I wrote. By the way, Brian. At least _I_ have sunglasses on.
TechCyberC Is it hard to make others work your own?
BAHWOLF LOL, Von!
TechCyberC I didn't ask that well.
BAHWOLF Touche'.
Yvonne Ah, but I understand. Both the comics and the two movie scripts are like working from a big outline -- I just had to flesh it out and make it... well, meatier.
TechCyberC But movies or books it would seem a hard thing to do.
corwin75 Do novelizations pay as much as original work?
JanCyberC Along that line, Was it the same with the Species book? A call from your Agent or Editor?
Yvonne Not really -- you just use your imagination. In a script the character is little more than a skeleton, and if you're lucky they tell what color the hair and eyes are. You build a past and a personality, likes and dislikes, reasons for the way they act.
TechCyberC Cool never considered it that way.
Yvonne Novelizations do not at all pay as well as original work, and you generally have to argue to get royalties. I'm not sure about the first Species, to be honest. It could have been my agent asking my editor (he works very hard for me), or my editing going to my agent and offering it.
JanCyberC Thank you Yvonne...two questions with one answer!
Yvonne But Species (the first one) was a great chance to get my name on 100,000 books when I was just past being a first time novelist. Hey, lightning fingers here. :)
JanCyberC It's pretty obvious you're familiar with online chat, etc., and can't tell you what a pleasure that is for us. You have an excellent website as well.
Yvonne Yeah, so familiar I think I just nearly knocked myself offline by smacking an unknown key on the keyboard. Yikes! And thanks. I like the webwork just a little too much, I think.
BAHWOLF Von's site was one of the ones I looked at when I first put mine up.
Yvonne So that's where you got the idea to put up a bare buns picture!
JanCyberC LOLOL!
TechCyberC Very nice site I got lost on it for hours the other day.
BAHWOLF HA!
dreamer :::waving at Atvar:::
Yvonne Hi.
crAtvar ACTION waves to dreamer
JanCyberC Hello Atvar!
BAHWOLF Hi, Atvar.
crAtvar ACTION waves to Yvonne
TechCyberC Hi Atvar!
Yvonne Waves back. I think.
crAtvar Such a friendly room
Yvonne Brian bites.
dreamer How did you get interested in collecting name origins and meanings?
JanCyberC Yvonne...we have a muzzle in the backroom, never fear.
BAHWOLF ACTION snaps at Von.
Yvonne Dreamer, I'm very picky about (ow!) my characters' names -- I like them all to mean something relevant to their actions and personalities. I'd spend literally three or four hours picking one name, going through book after book. So I finally just put together my own. Then I got the (ugh) idea I should try to sell it.
dreamer It's cool..I love names..
Yvonne Not all of the characters' names mean something, but I'd estimate 95% of them do.
corwin75 Some authors feel writers need agents, and some do not. What are your thoughts on agents?
Yvonne I have to say I think authors are better off with agents. It took me two years to find mine, but it was definitely worth it. Some of these contracts are just deadly. You need an agent who knows what you should NOT sign.
TechCyberC Do a lot of new authors get took advatage of?
JanCyberC Some publishing contracts are getting pretty slippery I hear.
Yvonne It depends on the publisher.
BAHWOLF Von, what do you think of the web as a publishing media? Do forsee a future where magazines and books have gone cyber?
Yvonne And yeah, there's one new publisher out there with a contract that shouldn't be anything but toilet paper. [grumbling] That's a hard question. How do you make money from an online magazine? People are strangely reluctant to read on line, yet they forget entirely how much time they spend actually doing just that.
crAtvar Could you explain the process behind the Novelization of Species II?
Yvonne Oh, boy. Ok, folks, hang on for a few seconds and let me type.
crAtvar LOL OK, I'll bug BAH for a while
TechCyberC LOL
BAHWOLF No, Don't bug me!
JanCyberC LOL.
dreamer :::whistling a happy tune:::::...waiting
BAHWOLF ACTION hangs on while Von types...
Yvonne No fighting meanwhile. [smack]
crAtvar So, BAH, do I even have to ask my question to you?
BAHWOLF No, don't!
dreamer Uhoh....
BAHWOLF I'm working on a Martin Zolotow story right now (the detective from the Kitty series). It's called "The Licking Valley Coon Hunters Club"
crAtvar cool, sounds interesting
Yvonne The whole Species II thing was last minute -- the scriptwriter who had the rights nearly let it go, then had a flash (duh) of what it would cost him NOT to have it novelized. I got it and was given a whopping six weeks in which to write the novel. I wrote it in three weeks, finalized it in five, and sent it in. TOR didn't understand the contract and dragged their feet, so (big surprise here) I didn't get paid for months and months. Meanwhile TOR allowed a "publishing manager" at MGM to line edit the manuscript (translate: "butcher" the first part of it. Then MGM moved up the movie by 56 days and TOR cut the advance in half. In the rush to get the book out with the movie, all the bad editing, typos, etc., courtesy of MGM, were left in.
JanCyberC Well, Yvonne, that sounds pretty harrowing.
crAtvar WOW
JanCyberC Yvonne, what drew you to Horror/Dark Fantasy in the first place...and which name do you prefer? Horror or Dark fantasy.
Yvonne That's the abbreviated version. I skipped all the fun with the galleys. Actually, I prefer horror, but Dark Fantasy seems to be the thing nowadays because publishers are shying away from horror. I'm going to press Enter after every three words from now on, just in case. ha ha
crAtvar LOL
JanCyberC LOL.
Yvonne And I've always liked reading scary stories, since I was a child. My first horror movie was THE BIRDS. I was six and we went to the drive-in, and the dog threw up in the back seat.
crAtvar COOL!
JanCyberC LOLOL!
dreamer the dog got scared?
Yvonne The dog got something all right. I think it was probably popcorn, though.
dreamer (g)
BAHWOLF ACTION makes a notes: "Never take dog to drive in."
crAtvar Based on the experience with Species II, would you do another Novelization?
Yvonne Sure. Hmph.
crAtvar LOL
JanCyberC AFTERAGE was set in Chicago, I believe, with Vampires in the Merchandise Mart...correct?
Yvonne Yes, it was.
JanCyberC ARe all of your novels set here? Sorry...in Chicagoland.
Yvonne Well, the three solo ones have been, yes. The novelizations aren't -- they're set where the story takes place. I have a planned sequel to AfterAge that takes place in Phoenix, though. Also, the sequel to FINAL IMPACT (RED SHADOWS) does not take place in Chicago.
JanCyberC Do you feel it's important to be geographically familiar with the location of your story? Is that an important part of your research.
Yvonne Definitely. For Species (the first one), I sent my friends Amy and Kurt on a "treasure hunt" around Los Angeles. I gave them a list of about twenty places to research for me.
BAHWOLF Good idea, Von.
dreamer I read one of the excerpts and enjoyed the bit about the greek olives.....
Yvonne I wanted plantlife, streetlife, lights, smells, buildings, traffic, everything. They had a pretty good time with it.
dreamer <--greek....
Yvonne That was in AfterAge. The restaurant it talks about it, alas, no longer there.
BAHWOLF Did you build a data form for this, Von? Something that you gave them? I would love to see it if you did.
Yvonne Actually, no. I pulled the stuff I needed to know more about from the script.
BAHWOLF Oh, I see. What are your thoughts on collaborations, Von? And have you done any?
Yvonne In the script, for instance, Natasha would be at the corner of -- I don't know -- Sunset and Fifth or whatever. I told Amy to go and tell me what was on that corner.
BAHWOLF ACTION knows of one.
Yvonne Only one little multi-multi-author collaboration. I take that back -- I co-wrote a short story with Wayne Allen Sallee once. We never did sell that thing.
JanCyberC LOL...with the way Movies play with geography, that could be dangerous Yvonne...real world Sunset and Fifth might not be the movie's.
BAHWOLF Does this indicate that you're not fond of collaborating or just that no one (other than Sallee) has approached you?
Yvonne I hinted at a collaboration with a certain author once, but I think he intentionally avoided the question. Oh well.
BAHWOLF His loss.
Yvonne They do change the movie on you, but the book is what counts. ha ha
crAtvar TRUE!
JanCyberC 8^D
BAHWOLF Ha!
TechCyberC Yvonne I'm wondering where you draw the line between SF and horror. ALIENS: MUSIC OF THE SPEARS was both I think.
Yvonne Wait!
dreamer :::waiting::::
BAHWOLF ACTION waits.
crAtvar waiting
Yvonne No one else has asked to do a collaboration, so I don't know about that. Time is always a factor. There's a line between SF and horror? ha ha. Aliens, I think, was kind of a mix. So was Final Impact -- which was all over the road.
TechCyberC I guess I was trying to ask what your perception of the difference is.
Yvonne Ah. I guess I'd call something like Tim Zahn's books, or maybe Kevin Anderson's Star Wars books more science fiction. Anyway, I always thought of horror as something with a supernatural edge to it.
JanCyberC Gand...please feel free to ask questions of Navarro...please just wait till she's answered one before asking another.
BAHWOLF Hi, Gand!
Yvonne Jan must have a macro for that. Where's mine?
crAtvar LOL
JanCyberC LOL, actually I'm a fast C&P and typer myself. 8^D Myth. Yvonne...how central a role does myth play in your research?
crGand ACTION ran in here so fast, her hair is still dripping :)
Yvonne Not very much at all, really.
dreamer How's that are we just above the water line?
crGand Question - if I've never read your books, which one should I read first?
Yvonne Go for FINAL IMPACT; it's still in the stores and easy to find, plus RED SHADOWS is coming out in a few months.
crAtvar any book signings planned for New York City?
JanCyberC Ah...we'll have to grill you a little on RED SHADOWS before you get away.
Yvonne Nothing planned for New York, Atvar. Sorry.
crAtvar :(
crGand But are they the *best*ones? In your opinion?
Yvonne Ask away about Red Shadows.
JanCyberC Can you give us a general idea about the plot?
Yvonne That's hard to say -- I like them all, although I prefer the solos over the novelizations.
JanCyberC Is there a blurb from it on your site at http://www.para-net.com/~ynavarro/?
Yvonne Red Shadows is.... Sorry about that. I had to stop and choke my family for a second here. ::sigh::
crAtvar COOL
Yvonne Red Shadows picks up 20 years after Final Impact, where all the survivors are trying to make a new life. It includes the survivors from FINAL IMPACT plus their children. It has vampires, cannibals, mutants, normal people, and a plague.
crAtvar AH, a love story!
JanCyberC OOooooooh. Got a plague groupy in this house.
Yvonne Hence the name Red Shadows. Okay, family is gone and lawn mower is fixed. ::sheesh:: I understand the biggest problem for writers who write full time is getting their family to accept that they're WORKING and leave them alone. Of course, I expect firearms will take care of this problem when it pops up later this year.
BAHWOLF The little ones don't generally understand.
JanCyberC LOLOLOLOL.
BAHWOLF LOL
Yvonne And, of course, the phone is ringing right now. Arghghg!
TechCyberC Life in the fast lane, eh?
JanCyberC Yvonne...it's been nearly an hour since we duct taped you the hot seat....
Yvonne I can hear the answering machine. It's a different family member.
JanCyberC which is about all we demand from a guest.
Yvonne I didn't want to answer it anyway. I hate telephones.
JanCyberC We'd love to have you stay and answer questions...but if you need to take off... we understand. Can you stay?
Yvonne I can stick around for awhile if you guys have more questions. :)
TechCyberC We demand?
JanCyberC Excellent, Thank you!
Yvonne Just let me reach for my M&Ms.
TechCyberC See you learn real stuff here.
dreamer mmmm....chocolate
Yvonne Who's demanding? Am I at work?
JanCyberC LOL. If your family calls, you could say you are. 8^)
Yvonne Or I could just not answer the (&#$@ phone.
JanCyberC Yvonne...I'm over on your website now and notice you have a library up....
BAHWOLF Von, it was wonderful to "cybersee" you. I have to run now.
JanCyberC Later BAH.
BAHWOLF Best of luck.
Yvonne Brian YOU GET BACK HERE
crGand Night Bah
Yvonne Hmph
crAtvar Working on a stoey, BAH???
BAHWOLF Can't, Von. Was just informed that I have missed a family moment.
dreamer uhoh
crAtvar Bye BAH
BAHWOLF Little one's brother took her training wheels off and she is riding up a storm out in the driveway. I need to go see.
Yvonne Oh. Fine. Buy, er, by-by. Good for her!
BAHWOLF It's a Dad thing.
TechCyberC Do that Bah take care guy!
BAHWOLF See everyone later. Von, drop me a line in email anytime. Always a pleasure to talk to you. BYe, everyone.
Yvonne Where were we before Brian's family moment? Oh yeah, The Library. Yes, my pet project. :)
JanCyberC http://www.para-net.com/~ynavarro/library.htm
Yvonne You can see pretty much all the books there.
JanCyberC Yvonne...can you give us the direct url where we can read excerpts?
Yvonne There's also an anthology page off of that. Okay, bear with me in case I have to go check urls. Let's see:
JanCyberC Your site is so interesting some of us keep getting lost.
TechCyberC Glad to know I'm not the only one who can't throw all my URLS out at will.
Yvonne (g)
crAtvar LOL, Tech!
Yvonne The one's I'm giving will take you straight to the _text_, not to the opening book page.
AfterAge: http://www.para-net.com/~ynavarro/afterage.htm
JanCyberC Ah! Thanks!!!
Yvonne deadrush: http://www.para-net.com/~ynavarro/deadrush.htm
TechCyberC I go looking to see if Yvonne has a picture up and enjoyed the site as much as any site I've hit in a while. And I'll be back still lots to find I think.
Yvonne Aliens: Music of the Spears -- http://www.para-net.com/~ynavarro/alien.htm I'm still hunting...
crAtvar be very quiet, I'm hunting URLs
JanCyberC Folks, you can get copies of Yvonne's books at http://www.para-net.com/~ynavarro/library.htm or via the CYBLING bookshelf for her at http://www.cybersecretary.com/ccc/amazon/
crGand Firsts? Signed?
JanCyberC But I think I'll enjoy reading the excerpts.
Yvonne Final Impact: http://www.para-net.com/~ynavarro/finalexr.htm Species (the original): http://www.para-net.com/~ynavarro/species.htm Species II: http://www.para-net.com/~ynavarro/spec2txt.htm
dreamer .
JanCyberC Whoa! You *are* fast on the keyboard! It's great that we'll have all these links in the log!
TechCyberC How long have you been writting?
Yvonne I think that covers it. I don't have an excerpt up for RED SHADOWS yet. I'm waiting to get a cover flat. Been writing since (ugh, I'm old) 1982.
TechCyberC That's a lot of stuff or so it seems to me.
Yvonne I still wonder if I wrote it all or my clone did. Oops, I never meant to tell people about her.
JanCyberC That's over 16 years. Yvonne...will you be doing any signings at The Stars Our Destination in Chicago?
TechCyberC (G)
dreamer (g)
JanCyberC When RED SHADOWS comes out?
Yvonne As a matter of fact, I'm headed to Stars tonight for their (drum roll, please) 10th Anniversary Party. RED SHADOWS is set for publication in November of this year.
JanCyberC Superb!
Yvonne Okay, no one's volunteering, so _I'll_ ask: Has anyone seen Species II at the movies? I'm not chicken.
crAtvar LOL
TechCyberC Nope but my son tells me I'm going to soon.
crGand LOL
Yvonne And how old is your son?
TechCyberC 14 going on 50.
JanCyberC My Sigoth tells me the same thing Tech.
crAtvar AS the Tuesday movie host here (b
